WRKO, WBZ, WTKK, Boston, Big Dig Tunnel Collapse

A TRUE TEST

Talkers In Spotlight After Boston Tunnel Collapse

*** See Program Notes Below, Including O'Reilly Visit ***

Last night's fatal accident caused by a collapsed portion of a "Big Dig" route that connects I-93 and the Ted Williams Tunnel had Boston's talkers springing into action and the public turning to radio for the latest news.

In high- pressure situations such as this, it's a true test of a broadcaster's professional skills.

Local news / talk stations WRKO, WBZ and WTKK-FM immediately moved into wall- to- wall coverage mode, with WBZ gathering eyewitness accounts and WRKO hosts calling for the head of embattled Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello, whose agency has overseen the mega- project.

At WRKO, Rush Limbaugh's show was dumped to make way for expanded editions of the John DePetro and Howie Carr programs. Stations also cut into live programming in order to carry a number of press conferences, including Governor Mitt Romney's call for the removal of Amorello.

In addition, the Boston Herald has featured exceptionally high- quality coverage of breaking news events today.

NOTE: I'm filling in this week at WRKO, 7-10pm and am scheduled to appear on the O'Reilly Factor tonight, 8pm EDT.

  • You ought to post video of your appearances on your blog. I can't stand watching Fox anymore so that would be better.

  • Brian,
You said on WRKO last night that you are known as the Radio Equalizer, "which is something that is particularly needed in the New England area." By this I assume you mean you're a conservative voice to balance out liberal ones (if wrong, please correct me).
But in terms of talk radio, almost all Boston voices are, indeed, conservative (as is one of the city's two major daily newspapers). WRKO runs Howie Carr, Savage, Rush, etc., while WTKK runs Severin, Ingram, Hannity, etc. (plus the liberal hour of Braude). So wouldn't true Equalization actually mean another liberal voice on the airwaves? There is an AAR affiliate, but it's signal is still too weak to hear in most places.

  • Given the dominance of the Globe, local TV, academia, etc., he is indeed a counterbalance. btw conservative talk radio does very well in Boston and you'd think AAR would do better
but with the Globe, NPR, etc.,
the libs already have their "voice".

Much of talk radio is conservative, yes, but that's because much of the other MSM is not...there's a demand for the other side to be heard.
