Half Hour News Hour, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh

A SECOND 'HALF'

For Now, Unique Comedy Experiment Ends

After watching last night's second (and possibly final) episode of FOX's 1/2 Hour News Hour, it was hard not to be struck by the presence of conservative bombthrower Ann Coulter.

Reprising her role as second- in- command to President Rush Limbaugh in 2009, Coulter's taped and relatively tame performance contrasted with the latest controversy that once again has her making headlines. Had 1/2 been live, or at least taped closer to the airdate, one wonders how this episode might have been altered.

With Coulter in hot water for a comment made about John Edwards, in addition to liberal rival Bill Maher taking heat for expressing disappointment that al- Qaeda failed to take down Dick Cheney, 1/2 could be well- positioned to bring humor to the hottest breaking stories.

First, however, it needs to get picked up by FOX, which is far from certain. While the first episode's ratings were spectacular compared to typical weekend news channel numbers, it's still unclear whether audience curiousity was maintained to a sufficient extent.

Half is still a work in progress, that's a certainty. And, after years of social conditioning that makes us believe this format belongs exclusively to the left, it's hard to get used to the idea of a conservative- leaning program in the genre.

That, however, is exactly why the 1/2 Hour News Hour deserves a permanent slot on FOX's schedule: it's a worthwhile programming avenue to explore. Let's hope we see it again soon.

  • So Brian. What do you think of Coulter's comments. And about fox News continuing to pay her to appear?

  • Update on Burlington VT: WTWK 1070 has indeed exited the Air America/Jones stable and shifted to women's talk as Eve 1070. (wonder if they mean Adam's wife, or Eve "Vagina Monologues" Ensler?) The Radio Ritas,
Women Aloud, and Rolanda (who used to have a TV talk show)

The format is part of Greenstone Media launched by the likes of Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda. It's already been on weak signalled WNSH in Beverly, MA for awhile (though they did squeeze conservative talker Laura Ingraham from their previous
    conservative talk lineup in)

Whatever: prog talk didn't cut it in Howard Dean/Phish/Ben and Jerry- land (not sure what political opinions, if any, will be on this new women's network. It may be more lifestyle talk...)

  • raccoonradio, you must mean Rolanda Watts. She used to work at ABC 7 in New York.

Eve 1070 in Vermont, eh? Wonder if some of this programming comes from The Life Style Talk Radio network, an offshoot of Business Talk Radio, which by the way is in Greenwich out of 1490 WGCH.

  • Most of the viewers for the hideous Half Hour Copyme Hour were most likely liberals who wanted to see how bullies could possibly be funny. And of course the self=described right wingnut proved that no one thinks the whole ugly rightist act is the slightist bit funny, and conservative clods are too culturally ignorant to even understand irony.

  • Yes, Gregrocker, you have summed it all up perfectly. Ann Coulter's humor is up there with my young son thinking that farting is hysterical.
Humor is a delicate balance between wit, intellect, and slight evilness. Being that conservatives lack wit and intellect; and their evilness knows no bounds (far from slight), they just cannot pull off humor!
