ARE WE READY?

Terror Attacks Create Challenges For America, Talk Radio

Almost six years after September 11, are Americans ready for what officals are calling a potential "summer spectacular" of terrorism? Did weekend attacks in the UK serve as a wake- up call, or have we become convinced similar events won't reach our shores?

With disturbing new reports coming from Scotland indicating at least one of the Glasgow suspects is a doctor, many of our previous assumptions about terrorists have been thrown out the window. Now, Islamofascist thugs come from highly- paid, professional backgrounds.

And evidence is now clear that the airport car fire attack was tied to two failed bombing attempts in London, pointing to a larger, more coordinated campaign.

Rather than reduce the potential for terror, Tony Blair's departure actually seems to have increased their determination to destroy the West.

Already, American airports are beefing up security, but it's hard to tell whether the public is taking extra precautions, or even paying attention. Are we prepared? It sure doesn't seem that way.

Meanwhile, the unfolding story poses huge challenges for talk radio, which is yet again caught with its pants down during a holiday week.

While American television news networks spent the weekend rushing anchors and reporters to the UK for live reports, talk radio ran the usual informercials and reruns.

And during a week when further attacks seem likely, including the possibility of attempts here in the US, most talkers have the week off. In their place are best- of rebroadcasts, or fill- in hosts, if they're lucky.

With that in mind, here's some advice for talkers sunning themselves on the beaches or exploring distant lands: keep the phone close by and be sure you know a speedy route to the airport.

You may be rushing home in a hurry.

UPDATE: two more arrests, police nearly caught the suspects before they rammed into the airport. Terror plot hatched in hospitals, say authorities. Even the Hyannis airport has installed new barriers!

  • Its not just talk radio that's asleep at the switch during off peak hours. The
Nathan's Restaurant site relayed a story about how most local D.C. media was asleep during a major suspicious package incident last Saturday night. Get it through your heads, media. Our world is 24/7 now. Allocate resources accordingly.

however, your comment here was completely to the point and wholly relevant.
