Fired KGO Talker Bernie Ward Pleads Guilty, Could Face Five Years

BYE-BYE BERNIE

Indicted KGO Talker Could Face Up To Five Years

For several days, San Francisco Bay Area residents have been on pins and needles as they wait to learn the fate of ex- KGO 810 AM talker Bernie Ward, whose criminal indictment on child pornography charges was first broken by your Radio Equalizer in December of last year.

In fact, thousands of people have reached this site as the result of Internet searches over the past 48 hours, looking for the latest.

Since December, KGO-7 (now separated from KGO Radio) and I-Team investigator Dan Noyes has done an outstanding job getting to the bottom of the real story. Was Ward merely investigating kiddie porn for a planned book, as he claimed, or were his motives far more sinister?

In February, Noyes blew Ward's defense to smithereens with an in-depth look at what spooked an Oakdale woman on the receiving end of his dirty pictures. At 6pm PDT this evening, Noyes will deliver another bombshell, this time with a full investigation of his time as a Catholic priest. Watch here for its release. (Update: here's their latest)

Disclosure: your Radio Equalizer was at one time a student of Ward's during a summer session at a Californian prep school.

Now, the week- long rumors can be confirmed: Ward has in fact entered a guilty plea in federal court, apparently in exchange for a sharply reduced sentence. He may serve as little as four years. (right image credit: KGO- 7 News)

From KPIX-5:

Former radio talk show host Bernie Ward today offered a federal judge in San Francisco a guilty plea to one count of sending child pornography over the Internet in December 2004.

But at the request of Ward's defense lawyer, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker deferred accepting the plea until the question of whether Ward must immediately be taken to prison is resolved.

Walker will rule on that question at a sentencing hearing Aug. 28. Defense attorney Doron Weinberg said that in the meantime, Ward has tendered a guilty plea but the judge has taken under submission a decision on whether to accept the plea.

The charge carries a possible maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a mandatory minimum of five years in prison. Weinberg said he expects Ward to be in prison for at least four years.

Ward, 57, told the judge during the hearing that he was aware that the pornography he sent contained sexually explicit pictures of minors.

From this point, it just a matter of waiting for the terms of his sentence and the Noyes report on Ward's past.

As for Bernie himself, however, he seems unwilling even to admit to his problem in a truly honest manner. And there's little doubt he fully expects to return to KGO Radio after his sentence is complete. Is that justice? You decide.

  • Bernie is a man who hates this country, hates God, hates the church, hates heterosexual males, hates the military and hates the police. I'm pleased to see him to go prison. I hope he does a miserable death there. I truely hate his guts.

  • Opening sentence: "San Francisco Bay Area residents have been on pins and needles as they wait to learn the fate of ex- KGO 810 AM talker Bernie Ward, whose criminal indictment on child pornography charges was first broken by your Radio Equalizer in December of last year."

This story is another example of the huge social and psychological differences between the people in San Francisco and the rest of the country.

San Francisco: Oh, dear, oh my!

Rest of America: Throw the bum out!

  • Right Benson, every single person in San fran defends pedophiles.... sureeeeee.
"San Francisco Bay Area residents have been on pins and needles as they wait to learn the fate of ex- KGO 810 AM talker Bernie Ward."

Benson, Brian editorialized (in an effort to try to be funny, because in con-land it is cool to bash San Fran, it is one of the pre-requisites to being a right wing commentator) Brian's joke is not FACT, dunce, it is right wing humor, which is about as funny as cancer.

Sure... everyone in San Fran cares about a silly talk show host turned pedophile.... Do you undrstand 98% of the country does not listen to talk radio????? Seriously, Benson, grow a brain. 98% of the country ignoeres talk radio , and 9 out of 10 people NEVER listen to talk radio. It is just not that important to sane Americans.

Do you really think the entire City cares about a talk show host??? Get a grip man, becides Savage is the #1 talk show host in San Fran.
Kind of blows a hole in your theory , that everybody in San Fran is "liberal". How can Savage be so popular is everyone in San Fran is worried about Bernie Ward? Do you understand how stupid you sound. I'm amazed you function in rthe real world, being so damm stupid.

Man , try socialzing, you live in a bubble where everyone fits into a neat little category. Benson, the world is NOT what TALK RADIO TELLS YOU, not everybody in San Fran is a "lib", the same way not everybody in Alabama is an Anti-semitic bible thumper. Not every con is a bible thumper, and not every "lib" supports pedophile talk show hosts

Guess what Benson, I'm a socialist-lib and I say toss the pervert in jail. Ohhhh it did not fit your preconceived mold, now did it? I bet you thought because of my politicsl opinions I have to automaticslly defend anyone on my side of ther spectrum.

you may defend anyone who is a conservative, even if they broke the law, because you take ideoloigy over common sense, not me or most people. Most are not as simplistic as you

  • I found KGO and Bernie Ward in the 90's and continued to listen to him until he went off the air. As a fan of his work both on the air as a host, as a charity fund raiser and all his work he has done in the Bay Area, my heart is sad. I don't think Bernies character is what is being made here, but I do feel he made some HORRIBLE mistakes. I have read the transcripts and police reports. I am well informed as can be without prejedice. I know according to the letter of the law, he broke it. I do think that that law is in place to help children, but can be revised. Each and every one of us has made terrible, horrible mistakes and probably never got caught. He did and was caught. I am just wondering if him getting caught up in something like this is worth the money that is being spent on him, both the prosicuting and jail time? I am wondering if house arrest would be better? I am wondering if his (what I believe to be his true character) 25 years helping the Bay Area will have any influence on a lighter sentence? Bernie has never hated God. Bernie never hated this country. Bernie never hated heterosexual males. Bernie has never hated the police or military. Bernie questions religion and our government because it is right to do so. And I am sure he is questioning himself right now. His family has also been very hurt by this, so I understand taking the plea may seem selfish to a lot of people here, but to fight something like this so publicly takes money and takes away from his kids and wife. I am sure they are shamed to no end. This is where believers need to try to either forgive or just not say torturous things about him or his family. They are going thru a wrechid time right now.

  • becki4jb,

Yeah, we've all made mistakes in our lives, it's part of the problem of being human. However, I've never, ever, made a mistake that could ruin my life and send me to prison. I don't anticipate doing such and I'm 55 years old. I have a family. I have a wife, and children and grandchildren that depend on me. I have a job that requires my life and finances stay in order.

What Mr. Ward did is inexcusable regardless of political affiliation. We've all made minor mistakes. Maybe we've gotten a speeding ticket or tripped and broken a bone, but most people live their lives within the bounds of decency. We are not a nation of Bernie Wards waiting to be uncovered.

    BINGO

Sitting around collecting child-porn is un-healthy and not only are you supporting an underground business which abuses kids, the addiction of child porn can lead to acting it out.
This is more than a mistake.... it's more likely a dangerous mental disorder....drug addicts make mistakes.... Ward has a problem which supports child abuse...
    disgusting....

  • Ward was sentenced yesterday to 87 months imprisonment followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

  • Ward's creepy lawyer, Doron Weinberg is also representing notorious Bay Area child psychiatrist Dr. William Ayres, accused of molesting dozens and dozens of young boys sent to him for therapy. Incidentally, the first judge on the Ayres case recused himself because of "antipathy" towards Weinberg.

FYI-Dr. Ayres had the first televition sex ed series for little kids in the 1960s on PBS.It created a storm of controversy for its graphic nature and excessive focus on masturbation....
