Longtime Libtalker Indicted On Child Pornography Charges

BUSTED

KGO's Bernie Ward Nailed In Child Porn Bust

*** First Reported By The Radio Equalizer ***
*** 08 May 2008 Update Here: Bernie Pleads Guilty ***
*** Attempts To Update Ward's Wikipedia Entry Being Undone! ***
*** NEW: Ward's Defense Used Previously By Rocker, Others ***

In a shocking development from San Francisco, longtime liberal talk show host Bernie Ward has apparently been indicted on charges related to child pornography, according to several sources in Baghdad-By-The-Bay.

Your Radio Equalizer has learned that Ward, a married father of four, could face up to five years in prison if convicted on each of the two counts. The allegations include both possessing and forwarding child porn.

The onetime seminarian and frequent cable talk show guest was to be arraigned earlier today, photographed and fingerprinted. He was expected to plead not guilty to the charges.

As of yet, a request for information from the US Attorney's office in San Francisco has not met with a response.

The longtime KGO evening host was notified yesterday by Citadel - ABC management that he has been removed from the station's schedule, effective immediately.

Whether he will be able to return is unknown at this time, but his page has not yet been removed from KGO's website. He did not host Wednesday's program.

In a statement released at 5:30pm EST, KGO Operations Director Jack Swanson told your Radio Equalizer: "Bernie Ward has been a valued, long-time employee of KGO Radio. We were just recently made aware of these serious charges and are surprised and concerned by their nature. As this matter is currently pending in federal court, we will have no additional comment at this time. A substitute host will do the 10pm – 1am broadcast until further notice."

Ward, 56, has not responded to an email request for comment.

As a longtime member
of KGO's evening talk lineup, Ward is particularly well- known in the Bay Area and beyond as a cable pundit. In 1995, ABC attempted to syndicate him nationally, but the show didn't take off.

On KGO, however, his liberal rantings have found a substantial following in the nation's most left- leaning region, making him one of the few "progressive" talkers to succeed on a long term basis. In fact, some observers wondered why Ward was not a part of Air America's initial lineup.

Now, however, it's hard to imagine his talk radio career continuing from here, especially if convicted of the charges.

UPDATE: Shortly (about 20 minutes) after our scoop appeared, both KCBS and KGO published their own stories. From KCBS:

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Longtime Bay Area talk show host Bernie Ward has been indicted on two federal Internet child pornography charges.

Ward, a self described progressive and former Catholic priest, hosts the weeknight Bernie Ward Show and the Sunday morning Godtalk show on KGO Radio.

KGO quoted Ward’s criminal attorney, Doran Weinberg, as saying that Ward was researching child pornography for a book four years ago when events occurred that may have led to the charges.

The San Francisco Chronicle is now scrambling to get the details.

IMAO takes the light approach.

Chron update:

Ward's attorney said today that the charges are based on incidents that occurred more than four years ago and were part of research for a book.

"As everybody knows, Bernie, for over 20 years, has been a progressive, opposed to insensitive authority - he has been a champion of charities, nonprofits for the homeless," said Doron Weinberg, who appeared in federal court today as Ward's lawyer.

"More than three years ago, Bernie was doing research for a book he was doing on hypocrisy in America," Weinberg said.

HUFFPO commenters on the conspiracy bandwagon:

Holy S---! Bernie of all people. From what I have read so far this prosecution stinks. What a novel way to remove one of the most vocal and credible voices against this corrupt administration from the air. Even if proven false the stigma this will carry may silence him. Just the fact that he has been indicted will turn many against him, no matter what the facts are. If this is a malicious prosecution being used to silence him, then anyone who raises their voice in opposition should be very afraid.

---

Could be that the "prosecution" is some republican ass wanting to take out a bush critic.

This sort of thing is why the congress has cowed to bushcon. Who know what they have on Nancy and Harry and Diane F.

What was that NSA wiretapping all about? Finding teeeerrrrroooorrrrists? Can't understand those towel heads, but lookie here, ahaaaaa aaaaa, Bernie Ward, looking at kiddie pics, quick get Alberto on the phone and the DA in Frisco -

Hope this turns out OK Bernie, and its all a lie.

  • Not surprising really. The bay area has a very ripe environment of immorality that approves of this kind of behavior so Im really surprised we don't see more of this kind of thing here.

  • ugh i hated that guy when i lived in sfo, and now there's one more reason why.

  • Both parties have sickos in them. Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.

  • I am a third generation San Francisco native. believe it or not there are a lot of conservative people in this community and I'm one of them. Unfortunately most of these scumbags and liberal rats move here from around the Country and hijack local politics and implement left wing policies. Anyway, Ward is a scumbag and I'm glad this bum is finally exposed.

  • Brnie Ward was a raving idiot on his show. he ranted and raved. not suprising he could not be syndicated. he should have gone on Air America where they preach the same unfounded facts.

  • Both parties do have sickos, but only Democrats march with NAMBLA.

  • I live in LA but commuted for a couple years up to SF and listened often to Bernie Ward. I agreed with almost nothing he had to say. But I'd suggest that people withhold judgment for now. Ward will make a deal, or go trial and then probably either be acquitted or convicted. This is an incendiary charge and the fair thing to do is to just chill, and let the legal system sort it out.

  • Well, now the Republicans outnumber the Democrats only 35 to 1 in perverted scandals...

  • He's likely a member of NAMBLA. That is why he defends it so vigorously. Ward is a pedophile.

  • Bernie should look on the bight side... in jail he will have a much better chance of losing weight.

  • "As everybody knows, Bernie, for over 20 years, has been a progressive, opposed to insensitive authority - he has been a champion of charities, nonprofits for the homeless," said Doron Weinberg, who appeared in federal court today as Ward's lawyer.

"More than three years ago, Bernie was doing research for a book he was doing on hypocrisy in America," Weinberg said."

Well, based on the above description and Brian's usual spotty news account, it's apparent this host could well have been targeted by the neocons...they consider "championing" charity and compassion for the homeless to be far worse crimes than any of the usual child molestation the filthy Rethugs get caught with at every turn, anyway.

I think I'll reserve judgement until the actual facts of the case come out (and watch you knuckle-dragging wingnuts disappear into the woodwork the minute it is revealed to be a high-tech smear).

I pray for his children, that their family need not be destroyed by these allegations.

  • Gee, Bernie Ward lives and works in San Fransisco, is a former Catholic priest, is loved by all the perverted folks, and now you tell me he's a perv who likes child porn, say it isn't so...

Don't pray just for his children, pray for ALL the children he has molested.

  • I like his shill agent immediately suggesting that the Bush Admin is going after him. And his lawyer saying it was 4 years ago for "research for a book". Well, I don't see any book by Bernie. Fancy that!
And since when do you "send" pornography while "researching" a book?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 20:46

  • The "Blame Bush" defense is predictable. Liberals never take any responsibility.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 20:46

  • You can only assume that those people posting slanderous remarks about San Francisco have never been there. Let's save the judgments and badly spelled hostile remarks until after his conviction. IF he's convicted. Don't forget these two infamous words: Michael Jackson.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 20:48

  • 'Well, now the Republicans outnumber the Democrats only 35 to 1 in perverted scandals...'

Oh, no no no. Repulicans have the closeted gays(being a liberal, surely you aren't suggesting that gay sex is perverted, are you?)but you Democrats win the perversion title. Scott Ritter, hero to the far left was arrested trying to lure a 15 year old girl to a mall so he could masturbate in front of her and now Bernie is oogling naked children on the internet. Repubs may have their issues but at least they prefer sex with adults. Democrats are pedophiles.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 21:12

  • The most damning evidence that Ward is guilty comes from his own attorney. According to Ward's OWN ATTORNEY, Bernie didn't just download kiddie porn images but also (and I am quoting) “he exchanged them with adults who do the same thing." (source: http://iteamblog.abc7news.com/2007/12/kgo-radios-bern.html) Now, even if I could be stupid enough to believe the "book research" excuse and excuse his downloading of a few images, there is no way in the world I am buying that his research involved trading pictures with other pedophiles. His own attorney says he did this - what a boneheaded admission! Ward is going to do time. No conspiracy here - just a sicko.

By Blogger Unknown, at 06 December, 2007 21:18

  • No, anonymous MORON, the man has been convicted of NOTHING yet.

Please explain, with mandated reporting, why Ward would not have been arrested until now, for an alleged crime THREE YEARS AGO??

So, you are saying the neocons just let such a dangerous pervert roam free?

    Why??

By Blogger hashfanatic, at 06 December, 2007 21:32

  • EXACTLY why this police officer put down his bay area gun and picked up his musical instruments. I made the left coast's only politically CONSERVATIVE music CD..and it is aptly named 'Blaming America First.' That is what Bernie always did. Now he can blame us for his desire to gaze at victims of child molesting, as that is who kiddie porn images are.

Notice that the Huffpo commenters - and others - have automatically assumed he's innocent, framed by the neocons, yada yada yada. I don't know if the allegations are true or not. We'll have to wait and see.

If he gets convicted, do you think Olbermann will vote him "worst person in the world"? ...Nah.

  • So the Lawyer says these are 4 year old photos that Bernie Ward was using for research on his book... So can he please give us the title and tell us where we can find this 4 year old book of his?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 22:50

  • >Please explain, with mandated
    >reporting, why Ward would not have
    >been arrested until now, for an
    >alleged crime THREE YEARS AGO??

    Because:

    A) His lawyer says that they were working with the feds for several years after the raid on his home to work this out.
    B) The research needed to bring charges and forensic examinations can be lengthly
    C) Since he was trading, he was probably part of a larger conspiracy or ring of picture traders and by indicting him too soon

    and finally:

Federal prosecutors don't bring charges they don't think they can convict on, especially against celebrities. There are many provisos under which the US Govt would NOT bring charges - like if he downloaded the images thinking they were adult porn, or if he stumbled onto the images without specifically searching for them (they can tell).

And finally - by his own lawyer's admission - Bernie Ward distributed child porn to other pedophiles. This is on the record and you can download the KGO-AM audio or read the news reports yourself. I don't think there is ANY level of research which justifies that kind of behavior.

Bernie Ward is going to the slammer. BIG TIME.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 23:03

  • Now, hashfanatic, get a grip. Grand juries don't indict innocent men. That fat boy's going to the Federal Pokey for a long, long time.

  • It's really disheartening to follow links from drudgereport and get to conservative sites and read all the hateful anti fellow-american drivel so many commenters write. If you think non-republicans hate this country and are your enemy instead of fellow americans who are also shocked and appalled by this, you need to smash your radio or tv or whatever it makes your thinking distort like this and this goes for both the left and right.

Hopefully after bush the country can start to unite again, instead of being separated by pointless political hate and anger. To get through this century we are going to have to be strong and united.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 23:35

  • He put himself in this position and he will have to get himself out. To try and blame Bush for this as his lawyers first reaction is just ridiculous. One down MANY more to go. There are too many loudmouths on both side and only serve to divide the normal people in the US. They line their pockets and act as if they are above all the rest. He catered to brain dead people who use the word "neocon" to describe people they do not agree with. He will not be missed and I am sure not the last one to go down while still high on his or her horse.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 December, 2007 23:42

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 07 December, 2007 00:50

  • I've been subject to Bernie Wards rediculous rants for almost two decades. I find it ironic that someone who spent so much time spewing hate and conspiracy would have such skeletons. That said, it always seems to be the people who tell us how we should be living who are proven to hypocrites.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 07 December, 2007 00:51

  • LOL! Blaming this on Bush!

You liberals ascribe all sorts of evildoing powers to the Bush administration. Now they are prosecuting Bernie Ward on a four-year-old child pornography rap. And you worry about the "safety" of Nancy and Harry and Diane F.

Lemme ask... If the Bush administration was out to silence people hostile to them, why would they waste time on a p*ss-ant like Bernie Ward? Of course, none of you liberals is upset about someone distributing kiddy porn anyway...

  • I have lived in Chicago for the last seven years but I am a Bay Area native and a former, devoted listener to Bernie Ward. While I was often at odds with his extreme opinions, I appreciated his more-than-occasional display of decency and kindness. From time to time, he rightfully wavered from the standard, San Francisco politically correct party line and told it like it was. I continue to be a fan of talk radio but have yet to hear a talk radio host as compelling and engaging as Bernie. I will be really, really surprised if these allegations are in fact true and will withhold judgment until more details about the case are revealed. In the meantime, I, too, pray for his family--who have a very long, tough road ahead of them--regardless of the outcome of this investigation.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 07 December, 2007 01:44

  • To the Bush-Blamers....

You have GOT to be kidding! Do you people honestly believe that a president gives a rip about a talk show host who cannot even get SYNDICATED? ROTFLMAOAPM!!!

Seriously - give yourselves a few minutes to pause and reflect.

Maybe most of *YOU* have nothing better to do than dream up conspiracies - but rest assured, the POTUS does not lose a lot of sleep fretting about YOU - he certainly has a lot more pressing issues to deal with.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 07 December, 2007 06:22

  • I don't think the absence of a published book is all that negative to his defense, especially if he's been on notice for the 4 years that he's in legal trouble for his research. That said, even if you are doing research for a book, that's not a defense to most crimes. Say I'm writing a book about being a drug dealer, do I get to hang out with drug dealers and deal drugs? And if you stumble into some situation involving underage porn or sex, you damn well better call the FBI before they call you (or before you go to the mall to meet the girl, or meet the guy who thinks he's meeting an underage girl).

I think a person with his resources, if innocent, could reasonably have been expected to talk with his lawyer and the authorities before engaging in any entrapment or otherwise illegal activities.

First off, the judges have decided not to try this case in the 9th curicuit court..but instead in Washington? Why? And Why are they indicting him after 4 years? After they found NOTHING in his Home or on his computers? Sounds like Bush's fascist regime starting to bring down the opposition. • Bernie Ward Defender said: All of you sound like you're spewing your hate more because he's liberal than because he's been accussesd of online porongraphy.
Wrong - the response to perverts is not limited to the liberals. Take a look at the response to Republican Senator Larry "Wide Stance" Craig.

Bernie Ward Defender said: There are alot of fishy things happening here. First off, the judges have decided not to try this case in the 9th curicuit court..but instead in Washington? Why?
The San Francisco courts are probably overloaded due to the high percentage of wackos in the San Francisco area. And most people know about the shenanigans done at "The 9th Circus"

Bernie Ward Defender said: And Why are they indicting him after 4 years? After they found NOTHING in his Home or on his computers?
Police don't find evidence at a person's home or computer when they arrest a bank robber. But they still arrest the robber.

Bernie Ward Defender said: Sounds like Bush's fascist regime starting to bring down the opposition... The Fascist persicution that happened in Nazi Germany is starting here.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 08 December, 2007 15:15

  • First of all, the Feds have been in contact with Bernie (through his lawyer) for the last 3 years. So this is not a surprise. Bernie does not say that he received and/or sent the child porn images. He is not lying like Sen Craig that he was not foot tapping in public restroom stalls trying to entice other men for gay sex or Sen. Vitter that GOD has forgiven him for his past visits to call girls/prostitutes or Rush Limbaugh's doctor shopping for his drug addiction, etc. Bernie was researching a book & he MAY have technically run afoul of the law on child porn. Also, one has to remember that this is revenge by the GOP run (corrupt) DOJ to go after Bernie Ward, so as to effectively silence him. The largest # of scandals (sex, money, civil, criminal, ext.) so far have been in GEORGE W. BUSH ADMINISTRATION. You can spin, lie, be dishonest, do whatever you want, the truth hurts GOP. So all of you GOP & Conservative shill, dishonesty & lies do not pay.

GOD Blesses those who are truthful & honest.
