Talk Radio, Blogs Alarmed Over McCain's Campaign Strategy

'RUNNING AS A DEMOCRAT'

Focus Shifts To McCain's Left-Leaning Campaign

Can John McCain out- liberal the Democrats all the way to a November victory? As the presumptive Republican presidential nominee builds a campaign strategy based on support from moderates, independents and even leftists, snubbed conservatives are reacting with alarm.

In fact, McCain's courtship with the "progressive" left has now become so pronounced that it has begun to take attention away from the bruising Democrat Party presidential nomination process.

Between McCain's overtures to eco-cultists, which won praise from the ultra- leftist Seattle Post- Intelligencer, to his move to hold conference calls with "progressive" bloggers, conservative pundits are taking notice.

In response to the latter development, conservative commentator Michelle Malkin has written to the Arizona senator's campaign, wondering when she can join the fun. Though she has since been told she will be invited, it took a public appeal to get "a seat at the table." And there is no indication other right- leaning bloggers will be granted a similar opportunity.

For his part, talk titan Rush Limbaugh says he considers McCain to be "running as a Democrat":

He's running for Democrat votes. He is trying to out-Democrat Barack Obama. Isn't it interesting that Barack Obama claims to be the uniter, yet he doesn't give an inch on his ideological views? He doesn't give one inch. He hasn't practiced the art of compromise as a senator in Washington. He's not practicing the so-called great art of compromise. The politics of compromise is a crock anyway, as it's currently constituted because it's always our side ends up compromising and giving things up. But isn't it interesting?

Obama is the uniter, Obama is the messiah, and he is as partisan as any Democrat in Washington -- and our nominee is running around saying it's time to end partisanship 'cause it's just about selfishness and pointless bickering and that we're all friends and that we all want to do what's right for our country. No, we don't! I think Senator McCain's going to have trouble defining who he is because he's trying to become all things to most people. He doesn't really have a consistent worldview.

He doesn't have a reasoned approach to governance, which is why he can reject national health care but embrace global warming -- and while embracing global warming, talk about ending earmarks and having tax cuts and getting rid of Big Government.

"Yep, we gotta get rid of Big Government," then we're going to do the global warming plan, which is one of the fastest, surest ways to government growth to come down the pike in a while. I don't think he expects to have any coattails, either. He's not seeking to have any coattails. He's out there running on his own. The New York Times today says that McCain's guy is going to run against Bush, is going to run against Congress.

Running as a maverick, running as an independent, not running as the head of a team. His entire strategy is make sure the quarterback gets protected. The rest of you guys can blow out your ACLs, but you gotta protect the quarterback. One more sound bite from Senator McCain's speech, and, let's see... Well, this is how he plans to end partisanship. Listen.

Meanwhile, Democrats are said to be worried that McCain has already begun to steal their thunder:

Democratic adviser Maria Cardona who helped shape her party's Hispanic-outreach strategy in the 2004 presidential campaign said she thinks Mr. McCain will have strong appeal to the nation's large Hispanic community — a key Democratic constituency and one that largely went for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton over Sen. Barack Obama in the Democratic primaries.

"There is no question that McCain would be more competitive with Hispanics than any of the other Republican candidates, starting with the fact that he was one of the original authors of the comprehensive immigration-reform bill, which bears his name with Senator [Edward M.] Kennedy," said Mrs. Cardona, who backs Mrs. Clinton.

Democratic strategist David Sirota said Mr. McCain's pro-immigration stance and the fact he has ripped into lobbyists and campaign-finance abuses makes him appealing to independents.

"I'm not one of those who believe this will be a runaway election for the Democrats. This could be a very, very close election," said Mr. Sirota, who helped mount the party rebellion that defeated Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut in the 2006 Democratic primary. Mr. Lieberman went on to run as an independent and win the general election.

In the end, your Radio Equalizer believes that trying to out-lib the Democrats is a fatally- flawed strategy. Why would "progressive" Democrats choose McCain when they already have Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton?

And how is it a good idea to abandon (or alienate) the conservative base when they could very well prove the key to victory in November?

  • His VP choice is going to be critical. If he selects wisely, he can squash the critics who question his age.

But if he selects poorly and ends up with someone like Huckabee, it will be President Obama in 2009.

And the personality queen, bitter and angry Michelle Obama, as the First Lady? Uggh!

  • I'm considering crossing party lines to vote for McCain, since it seems likely Barry will run for the Dems.

If so, I'll go to the polls and vote for McCain, if Huckabee is the veep.

For Romney, forget about it. It's not worth the effort to walk six blocks. I'll sit this one out.

  • After hearing the bonehead ad-lib comments from Huckabee at the NRA Conference about Obama diving for cover, you can now call him Huckabye.

There is no way McCain will select him as the veep.

Enlighten me as to how McCain is anythin but a Bush clone?
At one time I respected McCain, he turned his back on all his "Mavrick" positions". McCain supports tax cuts for the rich, McCain supports eliminating the estate tax, McCain refused to sign the Anti-torture bill?

McCain accepts that Global warming is real, BIG DEAL, 99% of the scientific world believes is real. This is the reason to vote for him? I'm seriously confused?

Obama is shifty on immunity for telecoms, Obama plans on increasing the funding for private contractors in Iraq, and Obama is shifty on NAFTA. These are important points, I have stressed over and over again, but Hash, would McCain support doing away with immunity for telecoms who spied on Americans? Would McCain abolish NAFTA? Would McCain lower spening on private contractors? I don't think so. If McCain wins, he is beholden to the ultra wealthy and the conservative base.

  • If the nation can survive the Bush Crime Family for eight years, it can survive Bush Ultra Light for another four, if it has to.

The world cannot survive even four months of the sham candidate, Barack Obama.

Are you suggesting Obama is more beholden to big business and the ultra-rich than McCain?

i doubt it. If McCain comes in, he is going to have to rub a lot of backs for them accepting him. Expect larger tax cuts for the rich, more war, bigger debt and a COMPLETE MELTDOWN of America. If the holders of the purse-strings put him in (the media controlled by the top 1%) he is gonig to have to reward them.

Obama is definatly not a man of change but I firmly belive McCain will become Bush x 1000 if he gets in. He will owe it to big business and the 1% who put him in.

In other words, 85% of this country controlled by the top 1% will remain the same under Obama, under McCain count on 100% of this nation being turned over to big business and the ultra-wealthy. This is my endorsement of Obama, if you want to hold on to that tiny sliver of "we the people" vote Obama, if you want to complete Reagan, Bush's and Clinton's agenda towards the end of democracy 100%, vote McCain.

so far my track record is 100%. I have predicted EVERYTHING that has happened under Bush and Clinton. Obama is a question mark, I'm willing to take a shot.

What is it, in your opinion that makes him worse than McCain?

Want the war with Iran ,vote McCain. Want complete elimination of taxes for the ultra-wealthy, vote McCain. He will bring this country to it's knees, you will have complete class warfare. Welcome to 3rd world America, Hash. Are you sure you want this? McCain might have used to be Bush light, he has shifted 100% to the neo-con, neo-lib agenda of destruction of the working class and endless war.

You will make the mistake of your life voting for this sell-out.

and this is in no means a ringing endorsement of Obama, I see right past his rhetoric. Obama will be more like Bush, Mccain will be Bush on crack rock.

and if you help put him in, when you are living in a tent city, when he turns over everything the people own to a big business, I expect
" sorry Jared, you were right". If Obama is as bad as you say I will be the first to say "man you were right".

2 years of McCain will have you wishing Bush suspended the constitution and remained president. Heed my words.... you will be sorry.

  • Change you can trust, a slogan that could turn around McCain's campaign?

Change you can trust contrasts beautifully with change you can believe in.

Everyone wants change, only with a team that we can trust to implement it.
If you're in a tough spot, you want someone to come to help you that you can trust, not someone you believe may want to help you.

John McCain, polls show, is rated as highly qualified and highly trusted. This slogan, change you can trust, reinforces this message.

It can even be added on to John McCain’s current slogan. Country first, change you can trust. Or perhaps Change you can trust that puts Country first. Or how about Change you can trust that puts America first

It implies without directly saying it that the other side is perhaps a little less trustworthy.

It also reinforces the message that in a time we were facing battle with Al Qaeda worldwide and two conventional wars, John McCain is a commander in chief you can trust to lead us to victory.

There are 30 days left before Election Day. Sarah Palin’s debate performance was good, but it's really up to John McCain to win.

    CHANGE You Can TRUST

CHANGE You Can TRUST to put COUNTRY FIRST

CHANGE You Can TRUST to put AMERICA FIRST

    CHANGE - TRUST
    COUNTRY FIRST

    John, are you listening???
