Weak Campaign Means Increased Role For Rush Limbaugh
DE FACTO STRATEGIST
Rush Limbaugh Fills McCain Campaign's Leadership Void
*** CNBC Doom: Nine Reasons For Market Optimism! ***
It's never a good sign when one's campaign strategy is taken over by outside forces. But in the case of John McCain, it may have become a necessity.
That's because conservatives need him to win even more than he wants to succeed, given the fringe alternative on offer by the Democrats. Yet his own effort to date has been lackluster, to say the least.
Filling the void is talk titan Rush Limbaugh, who has assumed the role of de facto campaign strategist. Where McCain can't or won't confront his political foes, Rush is there to do it for him, with as-yet unknown results.
During Wednesday's show, Limbaugh spelled out why he feels it's necessary to take on this role:
In the end, it's better to have Limbaugh mobilize his vast audience for purposes of holding Obama accountable than for McCain to do it himself. But Rush's listeners have very little time to turn this ship around. Without exceptional motivation, they may very well see their worst nightmare come true on election day.
It may very well be up to Rush and his fans to keep this from turning into a repeat of Bob Dole's 1996 fiasco.

CALLER: The reason I called is because I feel McCain has really been blowing the debates, both of them. In both debates, Obama started trying to track all the current-day problems back to eight years of Bush administration. And I thought when he did that, McCain should have gotten up there and said, "This isn't tracked back to eight years of Bush administration. This is tracked back to President Carter and President Clinton and Democratic Congresses that forced the banks to make risky loans to people that couldn't pay for them."
RUSH: Yeah. You and I and the rest of the Republican Party, the conservative movement, agree a hundred percent, and watch this stuff and say, "Okay, it's up to us. We're going to have to be the ones to secure victory for him. We're going to drag him across the finish line and then take on the other challenges that that presents." You know, one step at a time here. We can do it. That's the way it's going to have to be done.
I'm going to splay to you so you can no longer be frustrated, why McCain does not do that. I mean, Obama handed him a slow pitch, softball, hanging curve.
CALLER: Yeah.
RUSH: All he has to say, "I'm sorry, Senator Obama, but the roots of this particular crisis are in fraudulent mortgage lending started and suggesting by Jimmy Carter, expanded by Bill Clinton, implemented by Jamie Gorelick. You have two advisors who implemented these loans at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac." He could have just knocked it out of the ballpark. He won't do it, and I'm going to tell you why very simply.
CALLER: Okay.
RUSH: So that you don't get frustrated anymore, because it's going to keep happening for the rest of the campaign. McCain is going to get hanging curveball after hang curveball and he's going to strike out.
John McCain believes that the key for him to win the election is in the undecided moderates -- the independents, moderates, all these people -- who have not declared who they're for, the great undecideds, and the theory goes that they're all moderates.
Now, by moderate, I mean people who do not make up their minds because they think it's offensive to have an opinion about anything. This is the theory, and I think it's all wet and wrong. But McCain believes it. The theory is that moderates get offended by "partisanship."
So McCain does not want to be partisan and offend them, 'cause that's who he's seeking the votes of. Now, here's where this theory is so flawed, it's embarrassing anybody accepts it.
It is a myth, and it's one of these theories that's been alive in American politics put forth by Democrats and put forth by the media to get conservatives to shut up. It is designed to scare people like McCain into not saying what he knows is the truth because he believes he will offend these precious moderates, and what will they then do? What will they do? You tell me, Edward. What will the moderates do if McCain offends them by being partisan? What will they do?
In the end, it's better to have Limbaugh mobilize his vast audience for purposes of holding Obama accountable than for McCain to do it himself. But Rush's listeners have very little time to turn this ship around. Without exceptional motivation, they may very well see their worst nightmare come true on election day.

Maloney, this kind of has something to do with Limbaugh, but Phil Boyce has resigned as Program Director of WABC 77 according to All Access...
ALL ACCESS has learned that PHIL BOYCE has exited the post of VP of News/Talk Programming and PD at CITADEL Talk WABC-A/NEW YORK.
A memo to staffers at the station from GM STEVE BORNEMAN announced BOYCE's departure after 14 years in the post, effective TODAY.
"I’ve had a fabulous run programming WABC and these past 14 years have absolutely flown by," said BOYCE in a press release issued shortly after ALL ACCESS broke the news this afternoon. "I can’t think of a better job in radio and I wish everyone at WABC and CITADEL nothing but the best."
"I believe I have some great opportunities in front of me," added BOYCE. "I only hope they will be as fun and challenging as all of my years programming WABC have been."
CITADEL President, Major Market Radio Station Group MITCH DOLAN said, "PHIL's abilities as a programmer are well known but it’s his kindness and leadership that we’ll miss most."
BOYCE programmed WJR-A/DETROIT before arriving at WABC.

You Maloney are full of bal-o-ney! LOL! To think the Republicans can even "think" for one moment that they can bring up Fanny Mae and Freddy Mack and blame it entirely on Obama when McCain's entire staff are made up of ex lobbyist who only quit being lobbyist so McCain can say they are no longer. They still are lobbyist and one of them has his hand deeply ties to FM/FM. It's the pot calling the kettle black once again!
Furthermore Obama is ahead now because people realize the Republicans have been in there for 8 years and all this mess happened under their watch. Trickle down economics does NOT work!!! Deregulation left in the hands of greedy rich men(Republicans) doesn't work. Your failed policies don't work. That's WHY the Dems are way ahead and why in spite of low poll numbers in Congress are going to have even more majority in January. Thanks to every condescending, rich, white a-hole who contributed to this mess! Thanks for screwing up so that we Liberal Democrats can get back in there!Thank You! Thank You! Ha! Ha!

deever dave could not make a more ridiculous explanation even if he tried.
It was not due to Deregulation. The problem was exactly the opposite - excessive regulations that demanded low income mortgages. Bill Clinton and the Democrat Congress created an Affirmative Action Plan for Home Ownership.
Yes, you read that correctly. Congress established a quota system that forced banks to issue loans to low-income people with poor credit.
It's a shame that people don't research the issue before throwing up talking points from ACORN.

Rush jumping in and feeling he needs to take the leadership role should just about put the nail in coffin for McCain. As a moderate who has until recently listened closely to both sides (there was no recovering after the Palin nomination though), Rush can only do for McCain what he did for papa Bush. End his political career. Firstly, Rush and yourself for that matter, remind an undecided vote why we can't embrace the right. Secondly, Rush sees an Obama nomimnation as a rebirth to what had become a stagnant routine. What is already an ugly approach to enetrtainment and information, will be turned up to an insufferable level.

Honest question...how exactly is Rush HELPING this situation?
McCain is not even a big fan of talk radio, and its influence on American political dialogue.
How would supporting McCain benefit Rush's interests in any way?
Bob...Doesn't it make sense for Boyce to cut and run, given Citadel's stock price and prognosis for survival?
