Libtalker Bill Press Blames 'Spoiled Americans' For Obama's Poll Collapse

IT'S YOUR FAULT

Lefty Meltdown Over WaPo Poll, Libtalker Lashes Out

Are you ready to accept your share of the blame for Obama's collapsing poll numbers? If only "spoiled Americans" would stop nitpicking his amazingly successful run as president, our country would be less child-like, or something like that.

In the face of ominous poll data splashed on the front page of today's Washington Post, libtalkers were in a tough position today. But only ultra-partisan Democratic Party crony Bill Press could manage to blame voters for Obama's failure to thrive.

Here's the former CNN host during today's syndicated radio program:

BILL PRESS (32:49): I think this says more about the American people than it does about President Obama. I think it just shows once again that the American people are spoiled. Basically, spoiled-- as a people, we are too critical. We are quick to rush to judgment, we are too negative, we are too impatient. Especially impatient. We want it all solved yesterday, and if you don't, I don't care who you are -- get out of the way.

And again, basically spoiled. To the point where it makes me wonder if it's even possible to govern today. I gotta tell you, I don't think Abraham Lincoln -- who certainly didn't get everything right the first time -- could govern today. I'm not sure Franklin Roosevelt could govern today, the way we are again. Just about like spoiled children. And it's Americans, and it's the media, and if we don't get instant gratification, then screw you is basically our attitude.

A few more rants like this one could wipe out Bill's party for years to come.

  • Every time I see Bill Press, I am reminded of a Crossfire show that he was on during the Lewinsky scandal. "Where," he thundered, "is that infamous blue dress we've all heard so much about?"
About a week later, the blue dress showed up, exposing Clinton as a liar and Press as a hopeless party flack.
Who the hell cares what he thinks?

  • Ah yes, that whole "The American people are too spoiled to be governed" trope.

What he's actually saying is that the American people should shut up and take what their betters give them, just as Europeans do.

By Blogger Patrick, at 14 July, 2010 07:57

  • Mr. Press is truly representing the worst of modern leftist attitude.. the American people, to the extent that they've been made into quickly reactive creatures by the 24/7 press cycle, are VICTIMS of media types LIKE HIM. The media has always sought to shift, shape, manipulate our views and understandings of political matters, and now they are too many, their efforts too competitive... the sense of trumping each other and out-urgenting each other has brought about a hypersensitivity to 'significance of change' in the audience. He blames us for being stupid, but it is the work of people like him who have caused this condition he deplores in us.

I have NO SYMPATHY for Mr. Press. when the leftist media sets out to alter Americans' view of things, it succeeds, sometimes beyond its own vision (which was and is blinkered by leftism). You reap what you sow, idiot.

  • It always seems that whenever the President is a Democrat, and runs headlong into public opposition to his policies (Carter, Clinton's Hillarycare debacle, and now Obama), the press starts the same drumbeat:

    America is ungovernable.

Funny, they never seem to say that sort of thing when Republican president has difficulties. Then, the line is just that the troglodyte executive is a doofus.

  • OMG!

What color is the sky on Bill Press' planet?

The man's rant is so full of factless whines that it reminds me of Keith OverlyDouched...

  • "And again, basically spoiled. To the point where it makes me wonder if it's even possible to govern today."

The last time I heard this type of comment was back when Jimmy Carter was President. And then Ronald Reagan came along and put an end to this type of whining.

  • Press is a certified moron. I was listening one day as he hung up on a caller who was asking about the 21.3% cut in Medicare that's coming down the pike. Press knew nothing of it, and it confused him. If, as he claims, he's ab accurate source for political information, then his listeners are living in an intellectual Siberia.

Can't argue with that. That's exactly my attitude towards a Congress that has bankrupted the country, towards an Administration that bows to our enemies, and towards an intelligensia that keeps trying to piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

  • So funny, reading right-wing partisans whining about Press's left-wing partisanship.

He's pretty much right. None of you would be satisfied with anything Obama did. If you think you're any different than the idiots who paraded around with Bush/Hitler puppets, you're deluded.

  • The only problem is....Obama's poll numbers are not crashing. They have remained relatively unchanged for six months now.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 14 July, 2010 09:25

  • Every time one of these Leftards calls normal Americans who don't support socialist policies "racists" or "spoiled", they create another couple thousand votes for the Republicans.
Keep it up, spread the word, make the headlines, I say.

By Anonymous Diggs, at 14 July, 2010 09:25

  • If Bill Press's opinions are (or if his meltdown is) taken to their/its logical conclusion…

    http://no-pasaran.blogspot.com/2010/07/obamas-falling-poll-numbers-logical.html

…then Barack Obama should be allowed to dictate his policies to the nation (the nation of clueless clods that are preventing him from carrying those dashing avant-garde ideas through to completion)

    …then Americans should go through reeducation centers to be made to understand the good they are being bestowed, and to be made to refrain from criticizing (at least, not too much) the Spiritual Guide who is benevolently bestowing them upon us;

…in fact, then democracy should be curtailed and elections banned, at least temporarily, so that the benevolent Great Helmsman can implement his policies in the absence of obstacles from clueless idiots— be they common citizens or the unpatriotic naysayers in the opposition.

Of course, Bill Press is not saying this — he might even deny, quite sincerely, saying anything to that effect if he were told so in those exact words; still, this is inescapably the end result if his "viewpoints" are taken to their logical conclusion…

(And liberals, leftists, and statists wonder why, and think we are exaggerating when, we warn about paths to tyranny?!)

By Blogger Erik, at 14 July, 2010 09:30

  • Bill Press is so very, very correct: the brilliant Presidency of Barack Obama is wasted on us ingrates. He truly deserves better. Perhaps one day, an electorate of sufficient character may support fully a potentate of Obama's calibre. Sadly, that day is not today, and the globe sheds bitter tears at our shortcomings before one of such majesty.

Obama shall surely move on to bigger and better things after he wraps this podunck gig as President of the United States. Like, I dunno ... Prime Minister of the Netherlands? The Dutch are fine people, certainly a more suitable match for our illustrious and disgruntled President.

By Anonymous Bob Scrivens, at 14 July, 2010 09:31

  • I certainly hope Franklin Roosevelt wouldn't be allowed to set foot in the White House today - didn't we learn our lesson?

FDR extended the Great Depression and made everyone miserable. We now know that 21's his lucky number, which is what he used to set the price of gold after seizing it. Did I mention he lied to the American people that their SS taxes would go into a separate, special Social Security fund. Ha ha, very funny, Mr. President.

He did do one thing correctly, which was to help rid the free world of Hitler. Too bad Stalin killed 40 million people in the gulag, but that's Marxism for ya (did I mention there's a communist living in the White House?).

    Signed, Mama Grizzly.

P.S. If you wonder why I call myself that, it's because demand choice in my child's health care and I reject "leaders with plans" making health decisions for me. Repeal Obamacare.

By Blogger Jane, at 14 July, 2010 09:41

  • Press is right about one thing: America is becoming increasingly ungovernable. What he fails to realize is that it's primarily due to the Left's love of centralized power and decision-making that is causing it. With every additional power grab by Congress, the American people are forced onto the Procrustean bed of a distant, disconnected and largely unaccountable bureaucracy whose rules make no sense to anything outside the beltway.

Want to make America governable again, Bill? Have the federal government stick to the things it was charged with doing, Constitutionally.

By Anonymous Jeffersonian, at 14 July, 2010 09:47

  • If you mean that the American people used to have jobs as being spoiled I agree. They don't have jobs today and will not have them tomorrow or the day after. That is because government has regulated them out of work.

    By Anonymous savage24, at 14 July, 2010 09:52

  • I agree with him about FDR. That guy wouldn’t have been reelected once much less three times had he been forced to deal with the alternative media of today. Then again, he wouldn’t have been elected a first time since dude was in a wheelchair.

As far as the spoiled remark, Press sounds like he’s channeling Carter. I think we are spoiled to an extent as a nation. But that’s not why Americans are turning on Obama. First of all, when you run on a platform of being able to turn back the tides and the media builds you up as being the smartest guy ever who’s going to magically fix everything, then yeah, you can hardly blame people for being disappointed when he doesn’t come close to measuring up to expectations.

Secondly, the reason so many have been protesting the guy for well over a year now is because we’re not the uneducated rubes the media and politicians seem to take us for. We know when you spend trillions of dollars we don’t have(and are already on the hook for $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities), at some point the bill will arrive in the mail and we won’t be able to come close to covering it. It’s simple arithmetic which I assume is still being taught even in public schools. When that day arrives, we’ll long for the days when we could consider ourselves “spoiled”.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 14 July, 2010 10:06

  • "Great" analysis, darrell. Nice try at changing what Press specifically said then claiming that "He's pretty much right."

Press is claiming that it's the whole country (i.e., the American people), not just conservatives, that are opposing Obama simply because "we are quick to rush to judgment, we are too negative, we are too impatient." He didn't say anything about it being just conservatives opposing Obama based on partisanship. That's because according to opinion polls, moderate Republicans and Democrats are also opposing Obama and his policies. Nonetheless, you turned Press' comments into solely a criticism of conservatives and tried to imply that the opposition to Obama and his policies is solely or primarily due to irrational, partisan conservatives. As you wrote, "None of you would be satisfied with anything Obama did." This is hyperbole since conservative opposition would be much less vigorous if Obama were governing as a moderate, like he campaigned on.

See, the problem with Press' comments is that the American people haven't changed since Bush were POTUS, yet unlike now, Press & Co. never thought it was anything more than Bush and his policies being opposed when Bush's job approval ratings went south in his second term. It's the hypocrisy and whining of Press and his fellow liberals that conservatives are criticizing here more than anything else. You are no better since you have criticized conservatives here for simply opposing a POTUS whose governing from the extreme left then claiming conservatives here are no different "than the idiots who paraded around with Bush/Hitler puppets." Your lack of critical thinking skills and your reliance on overgeneralizations and blanket statements are duly noted.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 14 July, 2010 11:14

  • Bill Press is delusional. "Positive job growth"? Has he seen the unemployment numbers lately? Any job growth is due merely to people no longer looking for work. Obama "delivered on health care"? Gimme a break. The majority of Americans didn't WANT him to deliver on health care. What did he deliver? A deeply unpopular bill. Obama has been a disaster from start to finish.

"“After the uprising on June 17th The Secretary of the Writers Union Had flyers distributed in Stalin Way that said That the People had frivolously Thrown away the Government's Confidence And that they could only regain it Through Redoubled Work. But wouldn't it be Simpler if the Government Simply dissolved the People And elected another?“

  • Remember, this, Mr. Press?
I knew it was crap when I heard it, and I knew there would be fools like you who would lap it up.

"America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past. Our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.

"The journey will be difficult. The road will be long. I face this challenge with profound humility, and knowledge of my own limitations. But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people. Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth. This was the moment—this was the time—when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves and our highest ideals."

But don't you worry that empty little head of yours. The children will soon be run out of office; The new congress that will be elected in November will at least put a stop to his foolishness and the new CONSERVATIVE president we elect to power in 2012 will GOVERN.

  • Press is just continuing the theme that prevailed during Obama's 2008 campaign: the implied question back then wasn't whether he was up to the job, but rather whether the American People were worthy of him.

The problem for Bill Press is that, as one of the Naked Emperor's bodyguards, he's being slowly but steadily overwhelmed by the number of people who realize that no, it's not a "fashion accessory" swinging between the emperor's legs. He can't drag away everyone who now believe their lying eyes, so his final resort is to just start shouting, "Silence!" at them.

And when we are saddled with a leader (whom we did not all fall in love with from the getgo, FYI) who does not deliver what he promised, and in fact, shows the stripes he kept hidden and does exactly what we don"t want, we get even louder, and pushier.
