If the case for gay marriage is really about equal rights (or God forbid, LOVE), then how are we to process Rosie O'Donnell's own motivation for tying the knot?

During yesterday's Rosie Radio satellite broadcast, O'Donnell said George W Bush compelled her to "get on a plane and go get married" due to his supposed misplaced priorities.

Love? It apparently played no role in what Rosie freely admits was a partisan political stunt. As America invests so much energy in the controversy, isn't it time for more of this sort of candor?

We certainly have more pressing issues to deal with and the concept of "gay marriage" was pretty much invented inside San Francisco City Hall.

So what is this really about: civil rights, or undermining Republicans?

ROSIE O'DONNELL (25:29): George Bush, in the middle of a war, had an all-station news conference to announce how horrible it was for the safety of America that gay people were getting married in San Francisco, which pissed me off enough to get on a plane and go get married

It was like an act of... defiance ... If you're gonna count up everybody who you think is not of value and round 'em all up and slap a pink triangle on 'em

I just felt like I wanted to be counted amongst the people who [some] were saying were unworthy and not allowed to have the same rights as everyone else.


O'DONNELL (44:51): If you're a straight person and [same-sex marriage] offends you, call me and tell me why, [but] don't say because marriage is traditionally between a man and woman, because, frankly, that's such an old and tired line.

Rosie, America is "tired" of a draining debate initiated by fringe activists who clearly have suspect motives for pushing the issue. Thanks for cheapening marriage itself.
