Air America Digs Deeper Hole

Air America Repays Itself?

Gives Investigators Middle Finger

Could the New York City Department Of Investigation have been more clear? It demanded Air America immediately repay $875,000, to be placed in an escrow account the DOI could access for later distribution.

Air America's response to the letter? It transferred a mere $50,000 into an account controlled by its own lawyer.

Maybe Air America thought it should repay Air America?

That's one of the major revelations contained in today's New York Post.

New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has now opened an investigation into the transfers of taxpayer-funded grants from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club to Air America.

According to the Post:

The first payment of $50,000 was made yesterday, and it was deposited into an escrow account controlled by Air America's lawyer.

That unsettled city investigators, who had recommended that the entire $875,000 be placed into an escrow account that no one could touch without their approval.

"Air America has not followed that recommendation," said Keith Schwam, a spokesman for the Department of Investigation.

"DOI was informed today that Air America's check for $50,000 was deposited into Air America attorney's escrow account. No provision has been made for DOI to approve disbursements from that account."

Clearly, the New York Sun's "Deep Throat" was correct about the "payment", but this is a farce! Can Air America really afford to make investigators from city and state agencies angry?

Spitzer's jurisdictional limitations means he'll be forced to focus on the Gloria Wise end of the transaction, but there's no doubt more will be revealed about Air America, as a result.

Now, here's a question for Bill Press and AAR's other liberal apologists: why has Air America's current parent company been every bit as sleazy and evasive as the "former" owner?

Is it because it's nearly all the same people still involved, minus Evan Cohen?

Now, it's time to scream at the New York Times, how can this not be newsworthy?

How could you sit out this entire story? In protecting friends, you have failed as journalists to report the truth.

  • Brian,

you simply sound pathetic now. spitzer is investigating, so he'll ask for indictments if justified.. this just sounds like you want some much-needed publicity (malkin too, for her literary stab at the "liberals are ruining america" genre). Tired and sad.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 August, 2005 12:21

  • Justin;

It is "pathetic and sad" that Air America will have to be replaced. Conservative talk radio will no longer have a counterweight, thanks to true scum.

HERE is a friendly trackback to my latest post on MSM silence that ends w/ news about Air Scamerica. Daily Krappers are welcome to post comments, as well as Demoncrats, Republicans and Independents.

By Blogger Josef, at 06 August, 2005 13:21

  • Justin, I have to assume that those on the left have taken the "Fitzgerald is investigating" postion re: Rove?
    Oh, no, quite obviously not.
The NYT silence on this is comically ridiculous. If they run a story on this at all, it will be highly slanted or after the investigation is over and (possibly) if AAR is found to be "innoncent."
However, nobody on the left seems to be the least bit outraged/concerned/upset that a private business took money (knowingly) from a non-profit group helping young kids and alzheimers patients.

  • Lyin' Baloney a fraudulent phoney.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 August, 2005 14:28

  • Ace,

The giant difference between fitzgerald/rove and spitzer/aa is that rove holds national security clearance. aa does not. apples and oranges.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 August, 2005 14:50

  • Yeah, Anonymous - and you don't even have the guts to leave a name or identity.

Coward. I guess Brian is hitting a little too close to your liberal heart, because the left wing loonies are all howling like the moonbats that they are.

Remember when you tried to impeach the entire administration for kicking funds to commentator Armstrong Williams, who was promoting an education proposal? At least he was trying to help children - unlike Air America, who have demonstrably hurt children. Where is you outrage at the same thing happening on your side (actually worse, since there is a cover up, and a local boys and girls club got screwed)?

Answer - you have nothing. Air America is on its way DOWN DOWN DOWN and there is nothing you can do to save it, except to scream and curse at the people who dare to uncover the schemes of one of the most overrated, overblown and unentertaining business failures of ALL TIME, across ALL INDUSTRIES.

So much for "the next Rush."

    Good riddance.

  • Does anyone have the
    current ratings of
    Air America?
    Based on that infomation
    what is their income?
    Does anyone think they
have the money to pay the
    millions back?
    Will Spitzer publish
    the paperwork regarding
    the loans and terms?

  • Lyin' Baloney a fraudulent phoney.

Brian is lying? In the face of all evidence to the contrary Liberals stand by their propaganda wing AAR. I guess the DOI is lying as well right? And the NY Post? All lier's right?

Liberals must have the collective IQ of about room temperature.

By Blogger Scott, at 06 August, 2005 15:30

  • Justin, nice try, but um, that really doesn't cut it. Its a matter of principal, and you and your fellow lefties have none. So a security clearance is involved and its ok to presume someone guilty, that is what you are saying?

EVERYONE on the left has pronounced Rove guilty. Which is funny considering he isn't even the target of the investigation....
Anyway, like I said "is investigating" is good enough for you when it involves someone on the left. If its someone on the right, lie, smear, gin up faux outrage, hold hearings/whatever.
If its someone on the left, sit back and wait.
    Real consistent.

By Blogger Ace, at 06 August, 2005 15:59

  • Ace,

Very few people have said Rove is GUILTY of anything beyond speaking to a reporter about classified information (which has come from the grand jury leaks and Cooper's disgraceful decision to speak). Those lefties who have called hi guilty are being as pigheadedly partisan as is Brian Maloney in this situation. It is worth noting, however, that it is impossible for you to say that Rove IS NOT the target of Fitzgerald's investigation, since no information like that has been released one way or the other. He may the the target, he may not be. No way to know yet.

The reason I bring up the security clearance is only to point out that one situation could involve naqtional security (outing of a CIA agent), while the other could involve ripping off a charity. Both disgraceful, but the former clearly is more important than the latter.

As for having NO PRINCIPLES because I am a liberal, that is the type of remark that I wish I saw less of on this board. It diminishes all of us.

  • Justin,
I guess I was misreading all those comments all over the Web that:
    "Rove should be in jail"
    "Rove outed her"
    "Rove jeopardized our national security"
--And did you forget this news story from last month?:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House faced mounting Democratic calls for President Bush to sideline or fire his top political aide Karl Rove on Monday over his involvement in a CIA leak scandal

Sounds like a pretty solid presumption of guilt, right? And that is coming from Democratic elected officials no less.

Otherwise, Rove's attorney has gone on the record in multiple news articles saying Rove isn't a target and has been assured he is not in writing. Now would he make that up and jerk around a federal prosecutor? No.
Further, he testified as a witness. You can't be compelled to testify at a Grand Jury proceeding against yourself, what lawyer would advise you to do so? He appeared voluntarily and with those assurances.
Pretty substantial evidence he's not a target.

By Blogger Ace, at 06 August, 2005 16:50

  • justin, you seem pretty honest on this and I apologize for questioning your principles.

By Blogger Ace, at 06 August, 2005 17:00

  • Ace you forgot

    Rove: is treasonous and traitor

You can even get your Rove mug shot T-shirt

Because the consistent left believes in presumption of innocence...

    oh,but thats just one nut

but then again, people are buying these

    I know, it's purely anecdotal

but could it be a pattern?

    or just overly sensitive conservatives?

    you decide?

I'm not really upset with Air America's shabby loan.
It's expected with moral relativism, the ends justify the means. I'm more upset that the NYT (The paper of RECORD) doesn't even mention the situation. that's a BIGGER scandal.

By Blogger Nerdwallet, at 06 August, 2005 17:37

  • Are you wingnuts getting a little sensitive about being cheerleaders for Lyin' Baloney?

Baloney lied about why he was let go from KIRO. Dan Rather? Puhleeeze. Poor ratings nothing more. He was a nonentity. A showboater. However his lies were effective enough to get stories on newsmax and WND and even a spot on Faux News. Wow what an accomplishment. A fraud gets on fraud media.

He's still just an opportunistic nutcase trying to get back on the radio. AAR is a natural target because it's competition both ideologically and economically.

    He'll fail. Pathetic..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 06 August, 2005 18:00

  • What am I missing here? NYC's DOI and NY state are both investigating Air America regarding almost a MILLION dollars being funneled to their coffers. From a KIDS charity, no less. How can reportting those REAL actions be considered a lie? Are you drinking generic Kool-Aid or what? The New York Times, the three major TV networks have managed the news they report to a point that most Americans rank them behind used car dealers for being truthful.
What does Brian Maloney's radio career have to do with Air America?
Maybe Karl Rove had naked pictures of Gloria Wise and forced her into "donating" nearly a million bucks to AAR or he'd show them to Jerry Springer's kids.
All your pious and pompous shreiking is NOT going to stop the DOI or NY's attorney general from investigating AAR.
Now, go get some brand named Kool-Aid to drink.

  • The NYT had gotten burned by reporting on Whitewater with the implication that the Clinton's were deeply involved in the deal. $50 million dollars later nothing signicant against the Clinton's came out, Bill's private life notwithstanding.

So now when the NYT touches on the current investigation, they will point out within the first few paragraphs that Evan Cohen is a "reformed" Republican and possibly scam artist. And then the righties will go ballistic again about the bias in the media.

So how many of the right-wing-leaning bloggers have mentioned that Cohen was a Republican? It's that kind of fair & balanced reporting that they are known for. And the reason that the left just laughs them off as a bunch of amateurs with an agenda.

But everyone has an agenda, you say. Yes but the amateurishness is what makes them so special.

If Rush had taken the $900,000 from the boys and girls club you know that Elliott Spitzer, Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would all be in front of cameras screaming about the poor little black and brown kids that are being screwed over by the evil Republican.

Elliott Spitzer might finally be getting this in gear, we will see. The New York Times is showing their true colors. Its not about what's right. Its about the $$$. They don't want to piss off potential readers / voters so they will not go after the sacred cow AAR.

If you put Rush in the same situation you would be calling for his head.

  • Mark Steyn on the matter:

"Speaking of shivering coatless girls in Bush's America, spare a thought for the underprivileged urchins of the Bronx. The Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, a nonprofit social-services organization in New York, receives millions of dollars in government funds to give disadvantaged youth in poor neighborhoods a leg up the ladder of life. But mysteriously much of the money wound up being diverted to the coffers of Air America, the liberal talk-radio network whose ratings are yet another example of "deferred success." The needs of disadvantaged Al Franken and his pals apparently outweigh those of Bronx welfare recipients. Perhaps Janeane Garofalo is the coatless girl John Edwards was talking about all those months. Air America looks like the broadcast version of the U.N. Oil-for-Food program, whereby money earmarked to save starving moppets somehow winds up in the bank accounts of bloated self-described do-gooders with political connections."

By Blogger Ace, at 07 August, 2005 10:37

  • Mark Steyn is brilliant, as usual. He always nails it dead on right.
And John Kerry "legally" protesting the Vietnam war? He was still an OFFICER, but certainly not a gentleman when he did his protesting....claiming to throw his medals over the white house fence. We all know they weren't his medals. Smoke and mirrors and a traitor. But, count your blessing, it's people like Kerry, Howard Dean, etc. that are helping the republicans gain far stronger footholds in America to save us from the Godless socialists who want to tear American down. We are a CHRISTIAN nation.

Remember! Your $100,00 pixel friends placed on our site could mean you gain at least $100.000,00!!!

We are no students, and we are not looking to pay for college. Yet, when the site is successful enough, we would love to pay and we will pay for people who never had college or even seen a school before in their lives. We have made plans when the site reaches a certain level of success, says Janwillem.

Find out more about Walter and Janwillem, and their will be a Dutch business which offers profit design, profit solutions, web hosting services, consultation services and they endeavor to use own design as well as open source software for client projects wherever possible in order to keep development costs down. We are working very hard to try and get this baby walking. The site will be a great help. We ask anyone to buy our pixels.

Be their largest advertiser and gain $2.000.000,00!
