Air America Digs Deeper Hole

Air America Repays Itself?

Gives Investigators Middle Finger

Could the New York City Department Of Investigation have been more clear? It demanded Air America immediately repay $875,000, to be placed in an escrow account the DOI could access for later distribution.

Air America's response to the letter? It transferred a mere $50,000 into an account controlled by its own lawyer.

Maybe Air America thought it should repay Air America?

That's one of the major revelations contained in today's New York Post.

New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has now opened an investigation into the transfers of taxpayer-funded grants from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club to Air America.

According to the Post:

The first payment of $50,000 was made yesterday, and it was deposited into an escrow account controlled by Air America's lawyer.

That unsettled city investigators, who had recommended that the entire $875,000 be placed into an escrow account that no one could touch without their approval.

"Air America has not followed that recommendation," said Keith Schwam, a spokesman for the Department of Investigation.

"DOI was informed today that Air America's check for $50,000 was deposited into Air America attorney's escrow account. No provision has been made for DOI to approve disbursements from that account."

Clearly, the New York Sun's "Deep Throat" was correct about the "payment", but this is a farce! Can Air America really afford to make investigators from city and state agencies angry?

Spitzer's jurisdictional limitations means he'll be forced to focus on the Gloria Wise end of the transaction, but there's no doubt more will be revealed about Air America, as a result.

Now, here's a question for Bill Press and AAR's other liberal apologists: why has Air America's current parent company been every bit as sleazy and evasive as the "former" owner?

Is it because it's nearly all the same people still involved, minus Evan Cohen?

Now, it's time to scream at the New York Times, how can this not be newsworthy?

How could you sit out this entire story? In protecting friends, you have failed as journalists to report the truth.

  • Brian,

you simply sound pathetic now. spitzer is investigating, so he'll ask for indictments if justified.. this just sounds like you want some much-needed publicity (malkin too, for her literary stab at the "liberals are ruining america" genre). Tired and sad.

  • Ace,

The giant difference between fitzgerald/rove and spitzer/aa is that rove holds national security clearance. aa does not. apples and oranges.

  • Yeah, Anonymous - and you don't even have the guts to leave a name or identity.

Coward. I guess Brian is hitting a little too close to your liberal heart, because the left wing loonies are all howling like the moonbats that they are.

Remember when you tried to impeach the entire administration for kicking funds to commentator Armstrong Williams, who was promoting an education proposal? At least he was trying to help children - unlike Air America, who have demonstrably hurt children. Where is you outrage at the same thing happening on your side (actually worse, since there is a cover up, and a local boys and girls club got screwed)?

Answer - you have nothing. Air America is on its way DOWN DOWN DOWN and there is nothing you can do to save it, except to scream and curse at the people who dare to uncover the schemes of one of the most overrated, overblown and unentertaining business failures of ALL TIME, across ALL INDUSTRIES.

So much for "the next Rush."

    Good riddance.

  • Does anyone have the
    current ratings of
    Air America?
    Based on that infomation
    what is their income?
    Does anyone think they
have the money to pay the
    millions back?
    Will Spitzer publish
    the paperwork regarding
    the loans and terms?

  • Ace,

Very few people have said Rove is GUILTY of anything beyond speaking to a reporter about classified information (which has come from the grand jury leaks and Cooper's disgraceful decision to speak). Those lefties who have called hi guilty are being as pigheadedly partisan as is Brian Maloney in this situation. It is worth noting, however, that it is impossible for you to say that Rove IS NOT the target of Fitzgerald's investigation, since no information like that has been released one way or the other. He may the the target, he may not be. No way to know yet.

The reason I bring up the security clearance is only to point out that one situation could involve naqtional security (outing of a CIA agent), while the other could involve ripping off a charity. Both disgraceful, but the former clearly is more important than the latter.

As for having NO PRINCIPLES because I am a liberal, that is the type of remark that I wish I saw less of on this board. It diminishes all of us.

  • Are you wingnuts getting a little sensitive about being cheerleaders for Lyin' Baloney?

Baloney lied about why he was let go from KIRO. Dan Rather? Puhleeeze. Poor ratings nothing more. He was a nonentity. A showboater. However his lies were effective enough to get stories on newsmax and WND and even a spot on Faux News. Wow what an accomplishment. A fraud gets on fraud media.

He's still just an opportunistic nutcase trying to get back on the radio. AAR is a natural target because it's competition both ideologically and economically.

    He'll fail. Pathetic..

  • What am I missing here? NYC's DOI and NY state are both investigating Air America regarding almost a MILLION dollars being funneled to their coffers. From a KIDS charity, no less. How can reportting those REAL actions be considered a lie? Are you drinking generic Kool-Aid or what? The New York Times, the three major TV networks have managed the news they report to a point that most Americans rank them behind used car dealers for being truthful.
What does Brian Maloney's radio career have to do with Air America?
Maybe Karl Rove had naked pictures of Gloria Wise and forced her into "donating" nearly a million bucks to AAR or he'd show them to Jerry Springer's kids.
All your pious and pompous shreiking is NOT going to stop the DOI or NY's attorney general from investigating AAR.
Now, go get some brand named Kool-Aid to drink.

  • The NYT had gotten burned by reporting on Whitewater with the implication that the Clinton's were deeply involved in the deal. $50 million dollars later nothing signicant against the Clinton's came out, Bill's private life notwithstanding.

So now when the NYT touches on the current investigation, they will point out within the first few paragraphs that Evan Cohen is a "reformed" Republican and possibly scam artist. And then the righties will go ballistic again about the bias in the media.

So how many of the right-wing-leaning bloggers have mentioned that Cohen was a Republican? It's that kind of fair & balanced reporting that they are known for. And the reason that the left just laughs them off as a bunch of amateurs with an agenda.

But everyone has an agenda, you say. Yes but the amateurishness is what makes them so special.

  • What else do you expect from a bunch of rabid supporters of John "Treason is Patriotic!" Kerry?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 07 August, 2005 00:50

  • "Treason is patriotic" Kerry? What on Earth does that mean? The man served his country in the military, and then returned to legally protest a war.

It's comments like this which make the rest of us conservatives look foolish.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 07 August, 2005 07:40

  • Mark Steyn is brilliant, as usual. He always nails it dead on right.
And John Kerry "legally" protesting the Vietnam war? He was still an OFFICER, but certainly not a gentleman when he did his protesting....claiming to throw his medals over the white house fence. We all know they weren't his medals. Smoke and mirrors and a traitor. But, count your blessing, it's people like Kerry, Howard Dean, etc. that are helping the republicans gain far stronger footholds in America to save us from the Godless socialists who want to tear American down. We are a CHRISTIAN nation.

  • The most interesting thing is that non-profits must declare 'contributions' and expenditures to for-profit entities in their 990 IRS Tax Forms.

    These forms are available publically...

Kinda wonder how the 'Boys and Girls Club' phrased this 'loan' in the description portion of the explanation...

  • Left leaning blogs are now reporting that Michelle Malkin was denied medical care because she failed to change her underwear. The story was picked up by the Soros owned Washington Post and New York Times.

The Nation Magazine, another Soros owned media outlet, is also reporting Lien Baloney did beer bongs at a Sigma Nu rush party.

    Film at 11.
