Repayment Now Begins In September?

Terms, Please!

Neither Party Able To Keep Story Straight

It's bad enough trying to keep Air America's everchanging story straight, but what's left of the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club isn't any less frustrating.

Get a load of these two statements, by the same spokeswoman:

Officials at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club,— under investigation for lending Air America radio nearly $900,000, yesterday demanded that the left-wing network start repaying the money.

"Air America reached a legal agreement to have that loan repaid in full," beginning this summer, said Martta Rose, a spokeswoman for the Bronx-based Boys & Girls Club, which is the subject of a probe by the city Department of Investigation.

Air America had earlier said it put on hold plans to pay back the money because Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club was shut down by the city.
(New York Post, August 3, 2005)

Now compare to a newer statement, to CNS news:

Martta Rose, spokeswoman for the GWBGC, told Cybercast News Service that the radio network has always agreed that it would reimburse the charity, but that the terms had only recently been "hammered out."

"The money will be paid back within two years," Rose said. "The first payment will be in September."

Rose acknowledged that it is "not usual" for non-profit charities to loan money to for-profit business entities.

Are these statements consistent? I don't think so.

We have the Post story indicating payments are overdue, then a newer one with the same spokeswoman, claiming repayments will be made within two years, beginning in September.

One day what's left of Gloria Wise wants full repayment yesterday, the next, it's a long-term plan.

Maybe Wise can send Air America a handy coupon book for making monthly payments.

And don't forget, previous statements by both parties indicated that agreement was reached "months ago". I'm at the point where I no longer believe a word either side is saying about this scandal.

And aren't the "new" terms terribly favorable to Air America? They get two full years to make good on the money? Why are they so happy taccommodatete the company?

Will Air America still be around in two years? If I were running Gloria Wise, I wouldn't be too confident of that.

There's increasing industry speculation, mentioned to me by several people yesterday, that Air America Radio simply doesn't have this kind of cash at the ready. If repayment was demanded now, in full, perhaps it would be more than the company could handle.

Are repayments being stalled so the company can, in the meantime, file for bankruptcy?

  • Keep up the heat. Facts always win against slander. Keep presenting facts and the Air Enron people will have to face reality. The money should be paid back as soon as possible. Maybe Air Enron can go to moveon.org and "borrow" the money to make the payment to the Boy and Girls Club.

  • I imagine when Lobo basketball starts up again, KKOB will smoke 'em once more. As for the rest of the lineup, I've never heard of a single one of them. What makes them "Wingnut"?

Quite a surge in Spokane. They're up there with the Oldies now. *whew* OWNING that market; I'm sure that'll keep them solvent for ever.

(If the M's were any better, I'm guessing their Spokane affiliate KXLY wouldn't have shed much of anything.)

  • If the repayment starts in September, would that be fast enough to prevent the Boys and Girls Club from dropping the Gloria Wise community center 'next month'? (That was the NYSun story above.)

If they do get dropped, is that going to be a convenient excuse once again for AAR's current board to hold onto its collective wallet again?

  • Josef, nice to see a liberal blogger with some integrity. Read your post and can't disagree with a word that you wrote about AA. Not a big fan of Cantwell, but at least you're honest!

  • [Brian] And aren't the "new" terms terribly favorable to Air America? They get two full years to make good on the money? Why are they so happy to accommodate the company?

Why, it's the least they could do for such a noble institution. ;) Follow-up Q's:

. Did the gov't "double-fund" these programs to the extent they had to pay other charities to take them over?

. When gov't money went "missing" from GW, did GW continue funding those programs on their own dime or did they halt the programs as soon as the gov't money ran out? (If they paid for them, perhaps they're owed the gov't money as a refund.)

. If GW never spent the gov't money (or the equivalent), on what basis can GW now demand "repayment" of this money from AAR? (Are they to use this alleged income stream for future gov't programs in lieu of new grants? If so, why would they bother trying to collect money from a deadbeat when they could get the money hassle-free from the gov't...or can't they?)

. If others have taken these programs over, then why does GW have the authority to "accept" the "repayment" at all, let alone on such generous terms? If GW was hoping to pocket the money for a rainy day, they can take all the time they want to collect "repayment". (Just speculation - doubt such a scheme would stand up to serious scrutiny.)

. Is anyone (like AAR for instance) liable for any add'l funds used to transition programs to the other charities while GW was failing? This gets back to a point discussed on an earlier thread...

  • Rose's statements may be more consistent than they appeared... some clues:

Officials at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, under investigation for lending Air America radio nearly $900,000, yesterday demanded that the left-wing network start repaying the money [at some definite point in the future, though not necessarily "immediately"].

That at least confirms Air America has not repaid one red cent.

"Air America reached a legal agreement to have that loan repaid [by whom?] in full," beginning this summer [which officially ends September 20-22] said Martta Rose, a spokeswoman for the Bronx-based Boys & Girls Club, which is the subject of a probe by the city Department of Investigation.

"Have that loan repaid" in full? Why not say, "repay that loan"? Air America may not necessarily be the one paying up.

Martta Rose, spokeswoman for the GWBGC, told Cybercast News Service that the radio network has always agreed that it would reimburse the charity ["any day now"], but that the terms had only recently ["this morning"] been "hammered out" [no thanks to the mainstream media].

"The money will be paid back [by someone] within two years," Rose said. "The first payment [by that special someone] will be in September [, my favorite summer month]."

"Will be paid" back? "The first payment will be in" September? Not, they will pay it back, their first payment will be in September, or they will make their first payment?

The underlying consistency in these ambiguous statements is revealing IMO.

  • IOW, Rose's statements often seem to be implying one thing while technically specifying something else...just a gut opinion.

  • But what about breasts. I like breasts. Please blog more about breasts. And falafel. Falafel and hummus and breasts and loofahs.
