Thursday Air America Scandal Updates

Air Enron Roundup

Plus, Liberals Reveal Hannity's Personal Information

(*** New Updates: 12:30***)

--- Major new developments just in, from Thursday's New York Post. While Gloria Wise Boys And Girls Club faces new staff departures, Air America, Gloria Wise and Department of Investigation officials spar over repayment terms.

The Radio Equalizer will have a full analysis of the newest details, later this morning.

--- To see my most recent post, which includes a transcript of Al Franken's on-air remarks, scroll down or click here.

--- Michelle Malkin has a fresh update of her own for Thursday. Did you see her Wednesday post? It had a number of items I didn't get to.

--- Bizzy Blog has a great idea: let's send to the New York Times, Mapquest directions from their office, to Air America's. They could walk, if they like.

--- An impressive Columbia Journalism Review piece asks why the media is choosing to miss out on a juicy story.

--- Thursday's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review updates with a new item.

--- Excellent post at Powerline, a Star-Tribune reader wonders why the paper won't cover the scandal, given Franken's MN connection. The publication's response will have you laughing.

--- Charles at Little Green Footballs links to my Franken Mr. Subliminal piece, where there's a lively discussion about it.

--- Two important pieces from Captain Ed at Captain's Quarters that analyze the legal aspects of Air America's actions. Not to be missed.

--- "Air America" continues to be one of top searches at Technorati, actually moving up to 6th, from 10th earlier.

Instead of fading, it's becoming more interesting to readers.

--- MachoNachos has a new AAR post here. Leon's been great in researching the legal angles.

In big, non-AAR news:

--- A fascinating story from liberal talk radio blogger Blatherwatch: a contested Seattle newsroom union decertification vote, which resulted in a tie, hinges on one vote: Michael Medved's.

But aren't such ballots supposed to be secret? That's where this story simply gets weird and controversial.

Involving Seattle news-talkers KIRO (fair disclosure: my previous employer) and KTTH, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists
(AFTRA) Seattle Local's fate rests on which box Medved marked (fair disclosure: I'm an AFTRA member).

If you think his vote is a lock against the union, keep in mind: he's a 25-year member.

--- A moonbat rock band has been targeting Sean Hannity in a sick, personal way.

Take a look at the hassles Hannity's had to endure via these kooks! Cam Edwards has the full story here.

(BTW, I'll be providing another update for his NRA News show, on the SIRIUS Patriot Channel, at 5:20pm EDT today.)

Meanwhile, TVNewser publishes Hannity's (now disconnected) phone number, suggesting it was a publicity stunt.

The only real result: creating public sympathy for Hannity. The Boston Phoenix, which also ignored the Air America scandal, has a great time participating in this.

Hey, if you can't beat Hannity on the issues, resort to publishing his home phone number and address! That's the sad state of liberalism today.

Little-known tidbit: the same tactic was attempted against Michael Savage some years back, where Bay Area moonbats distributed his personal information on the Internet.

Keep an eye out here for further updates, which will be posted later in the day.

  • Why does MalKKKin and Baloney keep on calling Air America "Air Enron"? Air America is paying the loan. Enron, a Bush subsidy, forced tens of thousands of ex-employees into the poor house.

Too bad MalKKKin and Baloney didn't care about that.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 03:49

  • You keep on trying to change the subject. The fact of the matter is that your self-proclaimed do-gooders have been caught doing something that's not only morally reprehensible but probably illegal. What anyone names the scandal is irrelevant.

And what's with the MalKKKin crack? You must be one of those liberals that thinks it's okay to make bigotted comments when your only around your rich, white friends. You know the ones, the kind of people that don't need the services the Gloria Wise center used to be able to offer.

  • "The fact of the matter is that your self-proclaimed do-gooders have been caught doing something that's not only morally reprehensible but probably illegal. What anyone names the scandal is irrelevant."

Not even close Bozo. The fact of the matter is that a lying Republican tried to rape Air America while simultaneously raping a charity group that sent innercity kids to summer camp.

Air America fully supported the effort to send innercity kids to summer camp.

It turns out that this Republican jerkwad, who was fired after two months on the job with Air America was a scam artist (like Bush and Cheney). This douchewater is now in the sights of one of the best white collar prosecutors, and the next governor of the second most populous state.

Baloney, Dimwitt, and MalKKKin are trying to put on their tin-foil sombreros and connect the dots to make it look like Al Franken was behind all of this.

And, according to Walter Cronkite, "That's the way it is."

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 04:51

  • Enron? Weren't the filthy Republicans on Cheney's advisory board?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 04:56

  • Again, none of it has anything to do with what happened at AAR. Keep trying, though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 05:00

  • Actually, mr anonymous, all of Enron's misdeeds happened during the previous administration.

    Clinton looked the other way.

    Bust busted them.

You might want to look at a timeline, but I know you won't.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 07:00

  • It will be interesting to see how AA will pay the money back.

People can talk about Enron all the want but here is a fact. Al Franken = employed by Air America, George W Bush = not employed by Enron.

I suggest we try to ignore these people and keep to the issues. This story just keeps getting more and more intesting. Heck, liberals should be glad that AA is getting all of this free press.

By Blogger The Closet Republican, at 11 August, 2005 08:07

  • I laughed out loud when I saw the lib/anon in the first post saying "air america is paying the loan"...

actually, air america is claiming they will be paying the loan. THey have said nothing about timelines, terms, amounts of payment or payments.. in fact, all they've done is make a statement designed to pre-empt questions about whether the money will be returned.. so they can say "we've already answered that" whenever anyone asks..

I'm not holding my breath waiting for those poor children to get their charity programs back from Franken-radio...

And I'm STILL laughing at the idea that, in this day of multimillion dollar talk radio shows from one end of this country to another, the "liberal version of Rush Limbaugh" is pinching pennies and stealing money from orphans just to pay the salaries of wealthy entertainers like Franken so they can-- what? Make a successful and popular network?

    It ain't happenin....

  • Do I have this right...scAir America contends that by changing its name they are no longer responsible for the debt to the Boys and Girls club?

Wonder if that scheme will work for my mortgage?

Brian, awesome job reporting on this scandal by one of the America hating lib media outlets.

One question...what was the interest rate on this loan? I have only heard of repaying the principal amount of $875,000.

Can I go to the local Boys and Girls club and get me one of them no interest loans?

Don't you find it ironic the scAir America apoligist on these threads has no problem with scAir America stealing money from black children in the Bronx...of course his party does have ex-klansman Robert KKK Byrd as it's senior leader in the Senate.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 08:44

  • Nothing new here.

Brian's even reduced to recycling his pathetic Franken bashing graphics.

    Gawd!!

  • Citing anything from Michelle Malkin is a joke. She now claims that Casey Sheehan wouldn'y approve of his mother's actions down in Crawford. Are we to believe that Malkin knows the boy's opnions better than does his own mother? At what point did it become acceptable to attack the mothers of dead soldiers. She's a disgrace.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 09:09

  • A small but critical point that reveals Franken's lack of understanding of business. Franken laments that Air America had only three weeks worth of funding (for operations) instead of the three years worth which Franken believed. And now, Franken is an involuntary investor (I guess because he is working for free?) He then confuses having funding to cover expenses with this whole idea of "profit" - a dirty word of the left. For the left, profit is what is left over after you subtract expenses from your revenues. Air America could be making a profit right this moment if it had any listeners and could sell advertising. Keep talking Al, you sound dumber by the minute.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 09:10

  • As for the liberal anonymous, I did not know that a candidate for Texas governor is going to investigating the former head of AA, I would have thought the third most populous state would have jurisdiction. Maybe Spitzer should look at the loan given to Air America by the non-profit organization for improprieties. He does have jurisdiction over them.

As for your attacks on Michelle, liberals always get scared to debate the facts and must make ad hominem attacks against intelligent, law abiding citizens that actually think logically.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 09:15

  • Don't you find it ironic the scAir America apoligist on these threads has no problem with scAir America stealing money from black children in the Bronx...of course his party does have ex-klansman Robert KKK Byrd as it's senior leader in the Senate.

Has AAR been accused of stealing money from black children? If you could simply make a level headed comment on the matter perhaps the exchanges on this site could stop devolving into stupidity. The money was fraudulantly diverted from Gloria Wise Club. AAR didn't steal anything. Is that too difficult a concept for you to handle. Yes. The money was not supposed to go to AAR. Do you know of a liberal who has denied this to be the case? AAR has now started repaying the money. Bravo to AAR! Does that mena that the investigation should stop? Of course not. If anyone associated with AAR has been shown to have broken the law they should go to jail. If anyone currently at AAR is shown to have made ethical lapses they should lose their job. Is that clear enough for you?

Probably not. Y'all seem pretty intent on doing nothing but demonizing an entire group of your fellow citizens.

  • a lying Republican tried to rape Air America while simultaneously raping a charity group that sent innercity kids to summer camp.

Are you implying that Evan Cohen took the money and ran? Have you any first-hand knowledge of that?

By Blogger eLarson, at 11 August, 2005 09:31

  • He's got about as much first-hand knowledge about it as Brian has about what AL Franken did or did not know about the finances of AAR.

It's pretty obvious that Cohen was a weasel. Whether he took some of the money he obtained from Gloria Wise for his own personal use or used it all to make up the account deficits at the network may never be completely known. I hope it is. Clearly the guy was misleading investors in the network about how much financing he had secured. People are more likely to give to a cause that other people have already given to. Obviously as the launch of the network drew near Cohen realized he was gonna get caught with his pants down he tried to suck as much money out of GLoria Wise as he could. It's likely that most of it went to AAR. But who knows. Cohen did write a check for $30,000 (not sure on the amount) to GLoria Wise to repay one of the loans they gave him. But bounced of course. Who knows if he spent the money on himself or not.

I've stopped trying to use logic and reason when arguing with a liberal. In fact, I've stopped arguing with them completely. It's pointless.

For example, In Dick Tuck's diseased mind, he thinks that AAR is a steamroller that is flattening conservative talk radio, when, in fact, AAR has posted its lowest ratings ever in its flagship market (WLIB in NYC),

**Feel free to prove me wrong, Dick**

which is also the #1 market in the country, and has the largest concentration of liberals.

In the Sinatra song, New Yok New York, Frank sings, "If I can make it there I'll make it anywhere."

    AAR ain't makin' it there.

  • With regards to Dick Tuck, I checked RushLimbaugh.com for radio stations in Florida, he is broadcast on 23 stations covering the entire state. Air America claims 3 stations, one in Key West, one in Miami, and one in West Palm Beach. However, the West Palm Beach station only picked up Randi Rhodes, who has a past connection to the area. The West Palm Beach station also carries Rush & Glenn Beck. Please tell us again how AAR is overtaking conservative talk radio. I can drive from Houston to Miami & listen to Rush over the AM band. I tried to pick up AAR in Layfayette and Baton Rougue, but the signal wasn't strong enough!

scAir America has not repaid one thin dime to Gloria Wise B&G club.

Supposedly scAir America did give $50,000 to their own lawyer...no doubt it was a worthless post-dated check

And yes scAir America did steal $875,000 from the black children of the Bronx...or maybe scAir America just forgot they borrowed the money and forgot to pay it back...happens all the time.

  • Gee Mr. Tuck, so if the West Palm Besch station is the home of Randi Rhodes, and her's is the only AAR program they carry, do they really count as an AAR station? How much do Rush & Glenn Beck contribute to the station's ratings vs. Randi Rhodes?

By Dick Tuck, at 11:50 AM

    Another lie.

In the last rating book, WABC went from a 3.5 to 3.2, a decrease of approx 9%.

WLIB went from a lowly 1.2 to an all-time-low 1.0, a decrease of appox 17%.

  • Now that we've entered the second week of non-MSM coverage of this story, I'd be surprised if the focus of whatever MSM stories do come out of this turns out not to be AAR, but rather the rabid intensity with which right-wing whackos have been pounding various press outlets to report on the story. My impression is that y'all are just getting nuttier and nuttier as the lack of coverage (and real news about the story) drags on. Just don't resort to physical violence, that's all I say.

Personally, I think Maloney & Malkin would turn things around they'd just go the Ghandi route, lock themselves in a room, and refuse to eat or drink until the MSM breaks down and says something about this. (Alternatively, they could just hold their breaths 'till their faces turn blue.)

PS: I'm surprised none of you righties has called for a boycott of the Sundance Channel--they broadcast Franken's show each weeknight, after all. Hold Robert Redford accountable! Drag Evil Liberal Hollywood into the fray! It might be worth a few yuks.

  • HaHaha...malrex above posts links to lefty blogs for their take on the ratings. What more evidence do you need to easily determine there are no ratings sucesses in any other markets than Portland and Denver than AAR's continued silence on the subject of ratings. Unlike so many anonymous posters here and malrex himself, they dont have access to Arbitron data that those of us who work daily in radio have. Whats so hilarious is that the blogs he links you to cite "winter" book numbers. Well as so many know, that is history since the "spring" book is out for all major markets and many of the other small markets that AAR is on the air in. As with almost everywhere else, AAR shows a slight uptick, and then trends through a book of losses or no gains. Not to mention the horrible numbers in the available to subscriber only 25-54. No matter how you want to spin it malrex or dick, every radio pro knows AAR is failing and we have the numbers to prove it, unlike you and your delusional, obsession with a joke of a radio network. I'll ask once again, why no claims of ratings success and resultung advertiser interest from AAR itself. The answer is simple and plain to see. There are NONE! (regardless of today's Kos analysis..KPTK Seattle...N/A...HaHaha...Another AAR losing market share already)

    Franken:
Ok, it turns out he was on the board, or worked for, this Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx or something.

okay there are too many words that need to be bolded in this so,

"turns out", "or worked for", "this Gloria Wise" "or something"

How is it that Franken seems to be so unsure of the mere existence of Gloria Wise, a Charity that Air America sponsored a "Camp Air America" for kids?

I think this was even more telling. Franken, a man who wants to run for Senate, wants to PLAY DUMB about an organization he surely knows about. He'd do himself a wealth of future favors, if he just stepped up to the plate on this and rightly acted pissed, and demanded transparency.

Partisan politics aside, smugly defending and flippant dismissals and detachment of your employers questionable treatment of the illegal theft of taxpayers charity funds is not the makings of a successful Senate campaign.

True--some progressive talk stations have found more success running shows from other sources, like Stephanie Miller. btw, AAR puffs up their own image as "successful" by listing affiliates _even if they only carry one show_. Yes, that is technically true, they would be considered an affiliate by carrying at least one show, but they imply these stations actually carry the whole lineup, etc--Bob Nelson

  • Dick (head) seems to think Brian does not have access to Arbitron demographic data by daypart or the Tapscan qualitive reports that show hour by hour. As a radio professional, and friend of Brian's, I can assure you that he indeed does. While he is free to base his opinion of AAR's documented poor to non-existant ratings throughout the nation, he can not cite Arbitron. The data is proprietary and can not be refered to specifically without being a subscriber to Arbitron which is tens of thousands of dollars. However, those of us around the nation who work fulltime in radio are free to not only look at the reports, but report our findings to Brian. Unlike Dick who has nothing but lefty-blogs who haven't a clue. Just delusional, obbsessive, wishful thinking and moronic analysis of a failing radio network not supported by the facts. Just like Dicks blog, AAR in most markets could fit all of their listeners into a mid-sized Pontiac. Stuart Smalley and company couldn't program a police scanner during the height of a crime wave!

  • Captain's Quarter's has a decent legal anaysis of the Hairball America issue, but there's a couple of points that should be sharpened:

    (1) There is reference to an "asset agreement" that one would expect to see in a deal like like this. But due the sloppy nature of the reorg transaction, there might not be an formal asset agreement that even exists - or if there is - it may be so informal that it could not stand up to contractural scrutiny.

Perhaps the Scare America management is drafting one as we speak! Spitzer should have his paper and ink-dating chemistry kit handy if he is presented with what would be purported to be the "original" document (photocopies need not apply!)

    (2) It is suggested that an "innocent third party" would be able to hold an assets with a bad history with a clean title.

That might or might not be the case.

Receipt of stolen property by an innocent party might protect the innocent party from a criminal claim, but for ordinary personal use property the holder might be expected to return that property to the rightful owner - in some cases.

    (3) As far as I can tell Gloria Wise was never notified or had a chance to protect the organiation's claim.

Notification of creditors is one of the purposes of bankruptcy, and for interesting reasons that we will learn, bankruptcy was not used here.

It is important to understand: Wise's debt STILL EXISTS. The only thing being debated is who owes that debt - Progress, Piquent, Cohen, Franken or a combination of those.

This will be a facinating case as it unfurles. This case will be described in legal eduction training for years to come as a perfect example of how NOT to run an NPO.

I'm going to sit back and stay tuned!

  • Speculation isn't stopping Murdoch's NY Post or Scaife's Pittsburg Trib-Review from making shit up.

I haven't heard about the NY Post or the Trib-Review making any stories up.

But the NY Times on the other hand...

  • Highlights from Arbitron Spring 2005 Survey

12+ ratings are pretty useless. Tell me 'bout 25-54. Tell me about time slot vs. time slot.

How are they in Chicago? Can anyone in the city limits even hear them? Where are they on the dial in DC? I'm there quite a bit, and I'm sure I can stomach a few minutes at a time.

  • Breaking news!!! Dick Tuck has just posted an infinite % increase in traffic to his blog this afternoon with 2 comments! This is up dramatically from 0 comments. At this increase we project that everyone on the planet will have posted comments by midnite!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 19:26

  • Percentage increases don't seem to mean much when you are moving from 1 person to 3 people, yeah that's a 300% ratings increase, but it still sucks.

  • Evan Cohen is a Guam Republican, as in RINO Republican.

In Guam, partisan affiliations do not carry the ideological associations they do on the mainland.

D's and R's are simply rivals for power in Guam, nothing more.

    Cohen is no conservative.

So why did he fake a liberal conversion? From the WSJ:
Mr. Cohen told Mr. Walsh and others that he was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2001 only to make a miraculous recovery that spurred him to devote his life to liberal causes. This new radio network, "represented the confluence of business pragmatism and social progressiveness that I wanted for my second chance in life," Mr. Cohen wrote in a fund-raising letter to television journalist Bill Moyers, who didn't invest.

So apparently his first chance in life was as a conservative. Then he contracted brain cancer, something(?) must have affected his logic, and he became a liberal.

So RINO's have become rampant in Guam. Makes easy pickings for their superior mainland repub counterparts, nee Jack Abramoff/Tom Delay. Some have picked up on this hearsay:
Well is there a connection between Jack Abramoff and Cohen's Guam based investors in AA?

Let's wait and see what pops out of Abramoff when he gets indicted.

  • I just want to thank Lien Baloney for all the free advertising. Our numbers are going through the roof thanks to your effort.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 20:19

  • Something else you small government republicans want to regulate?
Nope. It was Hill o' Beans Klinton who bemoaned last year (about the time the Swift Boat Vets were exposing Komrade Ketchup, as I recall) the fact that the Internet doesn't have a "gatekeeper." Keep trying, though.

I work in radio broadcasting, too, for a real network that has real listeners and generates real revenue via ad sales to real sponsors. Those of you who think Air AmeriCon has us sweating bullets are in dire need of a reality check. Having to buy air time--like a small-time weekend local programmer with, say, a home-handyman show, or a Tagalog program for the local Filipino community--is no way to run a major network. In fact, it's not the way a real network has to be run. The fact that a libby radio network--started and run by people who have so little understanding of the free market that they think an untested product can just be high-handedly served up to an expectant and adoring public--has to resort to receiving stolen funds in order to stay afloat, is... not very surprising, actually.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11 August, 2005 20:37

  • According to the Gloria Wise Center web site, Air America is raising money from its listeners to donate to . . . the Gloria Wise Center. Someone needs to ask: Is THIS counted as part of the money they're "paying back"? Are tax-deductable donations from their listeners being diverted to repay a debt?

  • The 4th Estate wrote:My goodness, isn't that a loss of 50 PERCENT OF THEIR AUDIENCE???

They watching/listening to the Red Sox. Seems logical enough.

As for 850AM out of Crystal Lake, IL... they seem to have gone nighty-night, but I could hear a far-distant "84 AM"--I didn't stick around to hear where that was from or its calls. That AAR's Chicago affiliate goes dead at sundown isn't the end of the world in the summer, but whoever has their afternoon drive slot is going to be screwed come winter.

1260AM in DC used to be WWDC. From DCRTV.com: "1260 doesn't have the greatest signal - even during the day. It has an awfully tough time making it across the Potomac into Virginia."

I don't see WMAL quaking in their collective boots any time soon.

  • I'm not a radio professional, but, evidently, there some people here who are.

I'd like your opinions as to how long AAR can keep this scam going.

I was sure that after the NYC (1.0) ratings debacle, AAR would've at least cleaned house, vis a vis fire all the talent, but they've done the opposite. They're bragging about how great they're doing.

    ===============
    "BREAKING NEWS"
    ===============

-Energy and Asset Technology, Inc. (EGTY) owns a global license to market
the genetically enhanced Global Cedar growth trees, with plans to
    REVOLUTIONIZE the forest-timber industry.

These newly enhanced Global Cedar trees require only 9-12 years of growth before they can
be harvested for lumber, whereas worldwide growth time for lumber is 30-50 years.

Other than growing at an astonishing rate, the Global Cedar has a number of other benefits.
Its natural elements make it resistant to termites, and the lack of oils and sap found in the wood
make it resistant to forest fire, ensuring higher returns on investments.

The wood is very lightweight and strong, lighter than Poplar and over twice
as strong as Balsa, which makes it great for construction. It also has
the unique ability to regrow itself from the stump, minimizing the land and
time to replant and develop new root systems.

Based on current resources and agreements, EGTY projects revenues of $140 Million
with an approximate profit margin of 40% for each 9-year cycle. With anticipated
growth, EGTY is expected to challenge Deltic Timber Corp. during its initial 9-year cycle.

Deltic Timber Corp. currently trades at over $38.00 a share with about $153 Million in revenues.
As the reputation and demand for the Global Cedar tree continues to grow around the world
EGTY believes additional multi-million dollar agreements will be forthcoming. The Global Cedar nursery has produced
about 100,000 infant plants and is developing a production growth target of 250,000 infant plants per month.

Energy and Asset Technology is currently in negotiations with land and business owners in New Zealand,
Greece and Malaysia regarding the purchase of their popular and profitable fast growing infant tree plants.
Inquiries from the governments of Brazil and Ecuador are also being evaluated.

    Conclusion:

The examples above show the Awesome, Earning Potential of little
known Companies That Explode onto Investors Radar Screens.
This stock will not be a Secret for long. Then You May Feel the Desire to Act Right
Now! And Please Watch This One Trade!!

  • Abramoff indicted today.

    1. Malkin officially calls Abramoff a sleazebag.
    2. Abramoff has connections to the Republican machine in Guam.
    3. Note that Guam Republican politics shaped Evan Cohen.
    4. Ergo, Evan Cohen has become a Malkinized sleazebag.

    Connect the dots.
