Rush H Limbaugh Sr, Cape Girardeau, Federal Courthouse

FAMILY HONOR

Courthouse May Be Named For Rush's Grandfather

In a move certain to drive leftists bonkers, a new federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau, Missouri may soon be named for the grandfather of talk radio titan Rush Limbaugh, according to a report in the Southeast Missourian.

That's the possible outcome of a bill filed by US Senators Kit Bond and Jim Talent (R-MO), who wish to honor Rush H Limbaugh's service to the southeastern region of the state and the nation. Not only was Limbaugh a respected local attorney who practiced for over 80 years, but he also served as United States ambassador to India during the Eisenhower Administration.

From the Missourian's story:

Saturday, September 9, 2006
RUDI KELLER ~ Southeast Missourian

A Senate bill has been introduced to name the new building after Rush H. Limbaugh Sr.

Naming the new Cape Girardeau federal courthouse after the late Rush H. Limbaugh Sr. is an idea that's been brewing for a few years, U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson said Friday.

Some with an interest in the building have suggested that, like the new Mississippi River bridge, the building should honor Emerson's late husband, U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson.

While flattering, Emerson said, the bridge is "a magnificent tribute, and that is plenty."

Discussions of whose name to put on the $50 million courthouse began about the time construction started in 2004, Emerson said. Rush Limbaugh Sr., who practiced law in Cape Girardeau for almost 80 years, is the most fitting symbol of both the legal profession and dedication to community service, she said.

"It was kind of a no-brainer," she said. "He was just a perfect person."

Limbaugh died in 1996 at age 104. He continued working as a lawyer almost to the end of his life. He has several children and grandchildren who are lawyers, including U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh Sr. and Missouri Supreme Court Judge Stephen Limbaugh Jr.

Community leaders said the decision to put Limbaugh's name on the courthouse was made with little local input but added they have no objections to the choice.

"We did not suggest any names for the courthouse," said John Mehner, president and CEO of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce. "I love the name they came up with but did not suggest any names."

The story goes on to indicate that it generally isn't difficult to get naming proposals passed in Congress, but what about in this case? One can only imagine the grumbling from Democrats and so- called "progressives" when word of this reaches national newswires.

For instance, how will our buddy Keith Olbermann react to such news? Here he is on a recent anti- Rush rant:

Want to really make 'ol Olby's head explode? How about a Bill O'Reilly Federal Courthouse in San Francisco? Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

Another thought for Senators Bond and Talent: the Al Franken Port- A- Potty at the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Depository in Nevada. Run that one by Harry Reid.

In the blogosphere, The American Thinker has thoughts here.

And on Friday's show, Rush H Limbaugh III very briefly noted the proposal:

Anyway, what I was going to say, they're building a new federal courthouse in my hometown, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the proposal has been to name it after my grandfather, Rush H. Limbaugh, Sr., federal courthouse and we're very honored because this generally only goes to people -- federal buildings are named after people that have held federal office or really grown the federal government real big or used it in ways that harmed people.

In this case I don't know whether it will get through the Senate or not, it might since it has the word "senior" on it after his name, rather than just me, but my brother has been living at the construction site while he's wandering aimlessly
through the streets, (laughing) and that's why the title of the book Bankrupt. We're just kidding. If you missed this, it wasn't long ago that CBS went in there, the morning show, they were taking a tour of the country and they did some things on the tour that you can have to show places I grew up and hung around when I was growing up in Cape Girardeau. After the piece, the weatherman at CBS, he was talking to Harry Smith said, "Yeah, Rush's brother is still here, still wanders around town, still seen wandering around town." (Laughing) So we have been having fun with him ever since.

UPDATE: The AP has picked up the story. The backlash awaits.

  • Didn't Rush Limbaugh the Lesser get caught smuggling Viagra in his shorts while coming back from the Dominican Republic?

    What's up with that?

    By Blogger @whut, at 10 September, 2006 00:06

  • Apparently Maloney is now deleting comments off topic or critical of him. Maloney dishes out the petty insulting comments but apparently can't take them. How low will you go Maloney?

By Blogger none, at 10 September, 2006 01:25

  • They all do that.

Malkin, Sultanknish, moonbattery....the whole bunch of sleazy losers delete the "undesirable" stuff.

They cannot afford to show the world that people actually disagree!

  • "Apparently Maloney is now deleting comments off topic or critical of him. ."

    1.) Off-topics should be deleted!
2.) The poisonous ad hominem personal attacks do not serve any purpose as well. Ever seen that type of comment on a blog for Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann? Nope! because they scrub their sites on an hourly basis.
3.) There are some on the left who do not consider the personal aspersions to be "undesireable stuff".

p.s. Rush Limbaugh was not smuggling Viagra. It belonged to him and the prescription was in his doctor's name - a common practice among many well known celebrities.

  • samseder's comment was deleted because it contained almost nothing beyond personal attacks and abusive language. At least in the past there was a small amount of relevant commentary.

The other issue is how long we should allow "samseder" to impersonate Air America host Sam Seder. Sam hasn't complained, but it frankly got out of hand months ago.

This site has a very open comments policy, which is not the case when conservatives try to post to Air America's blogs-- we get deleted and banned just for opposing their views. But there has to be a limit, especially where the comment is little more than unhinged anger.

  • I don't know what the comment was, been off the board all weekend, no comment, but Maloney you are wrong. If Limbaugh's grandfather was a good man, who cares? Nobody will care. Now, If they named a courthouse after the pig man himself, I could see outrage. I don't know too much about his grandfater, but if he was a man for the people, god bless him. It's not his fault his grandson is a vile, bigoted mouthpiece for the radical right!! No liberal will care about this, if his grandfater deserves it, more power to him. I have no problem with it.
Maloney, you are creating an issue, this is not an issue

By Blogger Minister of Propaganda, at 10 September, 2006 19:38

  • MOP: click the "grumbling from Democrats" link in the story. It's already an issue. Even Rush Sr was a Republican.

O.K I give Maloney a drop of credit, he never deleated any of my posts, which are very critical of the right and sometimes name-calling but you are wrong on Air America boards, airamericaplace.com, has a place for the right to post on their message boards, if you listen to Air America, Randi Rhoders loves putting the right on the air, as does Sedar and Hartman, and Malloy. I see no censoring of the right on air america what so ever
The problem Maloney, this thread is a non issue. Limbaug's grandfater isa a non-issue, no liberals are talking about it, nobody cares. This is your problem, you assume what the left cares about, you try to speak for the left as many many Republicans do. You do not speak for me nor any liberal, so don't try to guess what will drive us crazy.

  • Look, MOP, I told you to follow the link. Since that didn't work, we'll hold your hand, here are some lefty comments about the Limbaugh courthouse for you to consider:

Oh my god what in the hell are they thinking, please pass the tylenol. I have a headache. Rush Limbaugh who never served a damn day in his life nor has he done anything worth having a federal building named after him. What impeccable character last I looked he was DR shopping. (excuse me a freaking federal crime)

    no...sorry....
As all references to the family Bush should be struck from our public institutions, for the shame and destruction that Jr. has brought to the American way, the family of Limbaugh should not be allowed to be honored. Grandfather or not, they raised that kid badly.

    A fitting distinction
Aww, how sweet. What an honor. It's nice to see a town bestow a posthumous dignification on a citizen who did so much for his community. His family must be proud.

I read your link. Does not seem like the "left" is making a big deal out of it. Raw story made a mention of it from as link of a more obscure web site. More of a mention, not exactly a an "uproar". You are stretching it indeed. You are creating an issue, where rawstory.com, just mentioned a little paragraph on it, nothing in the tone of up-roar, and it generated maybe 10 responses, not an issue.
Stick to RADIO, I discovered this blog, because I love TALK RADIO and enjoy Air America. I thought this was a non-objective talk radio blog, I soon learned this is a right wing talk radio blog. Sadly, I keep comming back. I came here to learn about the insides of talk radio, I feel you should keep this blog for non-partison A.M talk radio insider reporting, not right wing cheerleading. Many of your readers are from the left, keep that in mind, and be grateful we keep comming back. Have a politcal blog(seperate of this), this blog could be informative if you did not mix right wing punditry into radio news.

Strawman, with all due respect, I never hear of Maloney walking into Gray's Papaya and telling you how to grill people's hot dogs.

If memory serves, you have a web site. And a neato-burrito little podcast show. And to my knowledge, Equalizer has never, not once, told you how, when, where, or on what you should base your commentary.

In short, It. Is. His. Blog.

If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

You seem to know a lot about Viagra and what prescriptions are needed. Having some problems lately?
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    By Blogger @whut, at 10 September, 2006 23:09

  • Hash - bla-bla-blah.

If that's the best you can come up with, then perhaps you need a couple more hits off the hookah before bellying up to the keyboard.

Just remember, tho - oregano and orange peels are NOT a substitute for the chronic, so save your pennies next time and get the good stuff. You'll be more coherent that way...

you stale rignt wing hack.I gave him good advice. 80% of the people who read his blog are "liberals" a talk radio blog would be a lot better than a right wing hackery board that appeals to the 29% crowd. You are part of that 29% cult. Most Americans reject that radical Bushcult. And your ad-hom attack, it's tired and lame. I did not attack anyone, I don't work at a hot-dog place, I do just fine and you are jealous that I have a talk show, jealous that all of your "lib" stereotypes are just that, stereotypes projecting your own failures and misrable life on to others. Just like the GOP, projecting their failures onto Democrats, projecting their failed pre-9/11 terrorism policy on clinton with a lame low-budget fakeumentury, Cheney projecting his fascist leadership on others by calling everyone nazis. No wonder yo are a Republican, you love to project. You vote what you are, a mentally unstable failure who projects his shortcommings on others. Limbaugh blamed Liberals for obesity, more projection of failure. So laughable. You have become a joke on this board. You try to debunk facts I give you, you ad-hom attack me, I smack you and Benson around on a daily basis. It is too easy

  • Medication, Strawman. Strong medication. And when your doctor prescribes it, double the dose. I fear that's your only hope.

Only the Miracle of Science can save you now...
