Denver Talk Radio Muslim Flap, Gunny Bob Newman, KOA
KOA SPONSORS YANK ADS
"Progressive" Censorship Campaign Appears To Pay Off
An ongoing, nationwide effort to remove opposing viewpoints from America's airwaves is beginning to see results for the so- called "progressive" movement.
In Colorado, recent comments about Muslims by KOA- AM night host "Gunny Bob" Newman kicked off the latest leftist- backed censorship campaign, which has so far cost the station three sponsors, according to news reports.
Our previous coverage of the incident can be found here.
As we've mentioned, Newman merely stated an opinion about our policy toward Muslims in America, a view that was free of slurs or abusive language. While a he did take a fairly extreme position, there was nothing about the broadcast that would raise a red flag for most people.
Now, thanks to the efforts of Media Matters and other leftist groups, KOA is losing sponsors. In lobbying these advertisers, are they being honest, or twisting the facts?
In addition, is this crusade little more than an angry effort by "progressives" to avenge the failure of liberal talk radio?
From the Denver Post:
And there's more coverage here from the Rocky Mountain News.
Meanwhile, smelling blood in the water, Media Matters has stepped up its efforts to remove the conservative host, documenting additional "examples" of Newman's supposed crimes.
Unfortunately, Newman's only crime has been to state opinions that disagree with the Media Matters- led leftist cabal.
After the failure of leftist talk radio nationwide, this is a clear case of poisoning the well in order to make sure the medium as a whole dies next. Are conservatives paying attention?

3 firms pull ads on KOA program
An advocacy group urges companies to act after a talk-show host's remarks about Muslims last week.
By Will Shanley Denver Post Staff Writer
At least three metro-area businesses have asked radio station KOA-850 AM to pull their advertisements from the "Gunny Bob" Newman show following remarks about Muslims made last week by the conservative talk-show host.
The companies, Excel Roofing, Ralph Schomp Automotive and Three Tomatoes Catering, asked that the ads run in different time slots on KOA after being petitioned by ProgressNowAction, an advocacy group in Denver.
At least one other advertiser with the radio station is also considering asking that its spots be removed from Newman's show, said Michael Huttner, the group's executive director.
"We are turning up the volume," Huttner said. "We are going to increase it until (the radio station) feels the heat and understands that this type of hate- mongering will not be tolerated."
Huttner said the group has sent thousands of e-mails to Colorado residents on its subscriber list, urging them to ask local companies that advertise with KOA to join a boycott.
The three companies that have asked that their ads not run on the show did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
ProgressNowAction has taken issue with comments Newman made regarding Muslims. During a broadcast last week, he said: "I want every Muslim immigrant to America who holds a green card, a visa, or who is a naturalized citizen to be required by law to wear a GPS tracking bracelet at all times."
He also proposed that the government "bug their places of work and their residences."

When you spout of opinions that offend your sponsors, you lose them. Now, MM and the rest of the kook fringe will seize upon this tactic in their effort to silence the right. But, sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If the right isn't allowed their voice, how long do you think it will be ve for the right starts organizing and going after station licenses for PBS, NPR, and any other liberal/liberal leaning station?

Typical fascist tactics implemented by the left. Silence those with whom you disagree.
By Capitalist Infidel, at 18 May, 2007 09:24
The host spoke inflamatory speech, one can consider HATE speech, how would you like it if a host said, "Jews must be labelled and monitored"? I guess it is OK to target the muslims?
Nobody is stopping the right from speaking, you control the media 100%. Just look at whast the media did to Ron Paul, who spanked Rudy Giulliani's ass RED during the debate, the viewers on FOX picked him in second place as to who won the debate, MSCBC and ABC polls regarding the debate both indicsted paul won the debate BIG TIME, yet the MSM painted a differnet picture, opposite of reality, they declared Rudy won!!! Pathetic
Cons are pathetic, now they want to BAN Paul from debating since he obviously is shaking up the GOP.
Here you clowns are accusing theleft of stifling opinion, when your party are the ones stifling opinion, you are doing it to one of your own: Ron Paul.
Inflamatory speech such as this, which creates an atmosphere of hate and paranoia is not acceptable.
big differnece between KOA and the shock jocks. Can not compare them, this is full throttle HATE SPEECH.

Jared, are you another sock puppet of MoPoop?
Never see the left complain about Hate Speech uttered by lefties.
By PCD, at 18 May, 2007 13:54
Jared is me MOP
I don't know why it posted my real name.
what hate from the left?
there is none, and hating the filthy presdident and neo-cons does not count. Neo-cons are not a ethnicity but rather an anti-American radical cabal. Is the hatred of Anti-American neo-cons what you happen to be whining about?
Bush supporters are cultists, neo-cons are cultists, dangerous, Anti-american cultists.
I have no shame in this
I F*C*ING HATE CONS
YOU ARE THE ENEMY OF AMERICA

Brian:
You write:
"As we've mentioned, Newman merely stated an opinion about our policy toward Muslims in America, a view that was free of slurs or abusive language."
What Newman said was:
"I want every Muslim immigrant to America who holds a green card, a visa, or who is a naturalized citizen to be required by law to wear a GPS tracking bracelet at all times."
I'll leave aside the amusing fact that anyone who carries a cellphone already is carrying a GPS tracking device, meaning that we're all alreay being monitored.
How can you call this a simple policy statement? It's completely offensive, and it's unlike many statments like "We should tattoo all the Jews" or "We should install alcohol detection devices in all Irishmen's cars" becaus no one takes these sorts of statements seriously.
There are many people out there, however, who think Muslims are a real threat, who would quite happily institute the most repressive and vile tactics against them (I still shudder thinking about that Republican audience at the recent debates applauding waterboarding and detaining people without lawyers [Double Guantánamo? What's wrong with that Breck Girl Romney?]).
This statement is not a nice little powerpoint presentation about building a playground in the park. This is fanning people's worst bigoted instincts--and all to make money. It's vile.
