The Radio Equalizer: Brian Maloney

Opie & Anthony Suspended, Condi Rice, XM, CBS

SIGNALS CROSSED

Booted From One Medium, Shockers Continue On The Other

*** Update: Official Fan Site Claims They've Been Fired ***

After a savage verbal attack against Secretary Of State Condi Rice, how have radio shockmeisters Opie & Anthony managed to keep their jobs?

The answer is that if they do survive, they'll owe it to a technicality.

Late yesterday, XM Satellite Radio suspended the duo for 30 days after acting out a sick rape fantasy involving Rice, which we previously covered here. With so many other shock talkers losing gigs over far less hostile language, this punishment appears light.

Interestingly, the New York Times reports they could have escaped any punishment from XM, had they not gone back and revisited the flap on the air earlier this week. These guys obviously don't know when to keep their mouths shut.

But that doesn't mean O & A will be sleeping in this morning. On the contrary, the "clean" CBS Radio version of their show continues uninterrupted.

Given how the segment in question never aired on CBS Radio's land- based stations, that might seem fair.

On the other hand, can the network simply pretend it didn't happen, especially after it fired Don Imus for words that now seem tame by comparison?

Especially given the I-Man's pending suit against CBS over his termination, that's what makes the network's position seem inconsistent. In addition, FREE FM talkers JV & Elvis were canned just last week by the network over a Chinese restaurant prank.

And don't forget Dave Lenihan, a former KTRS / St Louis talker who was fired for accidently calling Rice a "coon". Many have lost jobs over far less.

Your Radio Equalizer is not actually calling for anyone to be fired as a result of this disgusting stunt. Instead, it's time to hammer out a clear indication of what is acceptable and what isn't, both on and off the air.

Until then, Opie & Anthony are basking in the "glory" of a sick verbal attack on a person who didn't deserve it.

  • They weren't acting out a rape fantasy, they were mocking the guy who said it. If you want to know the exact words that were used, and they context in which they were used, go here.

  • did you hear the segment? most articles i have read about this blatantly show that the writer hasn't even heard the sketch. O&A were not the ones talking. If anything why not fire the guy in the booth for not dumping it out? do yourself a favor and listen to the segment, O&A although not saints, definitely should not have been suspended (fired?) for this...ESPECIALLY from satellite.

  • What has amazed me about this story is how few talking heads actually understand that O&A do TWO SEPARATE SHOWS -- NOT AN EDITED VERSION FOR CBS.

O'Reilly and Malkin the other night both noted how CBS had "edited" out the offensive comments. No it didn't. The two shows are both broadcast live, and separately (they walk from one studio to the other).

Hey Brian, any criticism for O and Malkin not knowing what they're talking about?

  • It's clear that you are no better than any of the other talking heads in your commentary. You didn't even listen to the segment... that's a statement of fact, as your description of the conversation is clearly wrong.

What I find most reprehensible about this entire thing, is that you probably get paid for each "blog" item you post or click through your blog gets. And it's the same regardless of the amount of thought and effort you put into the post. So rather than take the time and put together posting (for or against) that shows clear thought and insight into the issues surrounding Satellite radio as a mechanism for communication of ideas and thoughts, you take the path of least resistance. Kudos to you Mr. Baloney...

Dave G will find you and smack you in your mouth.

  • Dave G,

3rd post. Where'd you come from or whose sock puppet are you?

  • Is "shock radio" dead?

Today's Boston Globe reports that WRKO is going to try out Bernie McGuirk next week as a possible sidekick for Tommy Taxes' Felon's Forum.
