LA Times Falsely Claims Dems Won't Shut Down Talk Radio
AWAITING OBAMA'S ORDERS
Sleazy LA Times Attacks Talkers Over Shutdown Fears
The same publication that actively aided Barack Obama's campaign by suppressing a potentially incriminating video is now leading the charge against the Dear Leader's critics in talk radio.
Far left attack dog James Rainey of the dying Los Angeles Times, who just last week falsely accused hosts of behaving "shamelessly" in the wake of Obama's victory, has followed up with another smear, this time inaccurately claiming Democrats are not planning a Chinese communist-style crackdown on conservative critics.
Despite indications from at least three senators that a clampdown on talk radio is in fact on the way, Rainey instead attacks conservative hosts for daring to worry about it. Hilariously, in the search for evidence to back up his claim, he turns to left-wing Democrat partisan Markos Moulitsas:
Gosh, if Kos says it ain't so, then he MUST be correct, right? Clearly, the left isn't about to admit they plan to suppress political dissent, hence the mind games.
Meanwhile, the Boston Herald's Jessica Heslam reported Friday evening that one current FCC commissioner does believe the misnamed "Fairness Doctrine" could indeed be on its way to a radio dial near you:
As Ed Morrissey points out at Hot Air, Democrats have included a desire to shut down conservative talk radio in their party platform for a number of years. He correctly calls Rainey's latest smear piece "confused and contradictory".
Meanwhile, continuing the left's trickery on talk radio, Senator Bingaman (D-NM) is now backtracking on the very stance he took just weeks ago. From CNS News:
Also noteworthy, former FCC Commissioner Henry Rivera was quietly shifted to another position within Obama's transition team late this week. That occurred after an outcry over his past ties to radical advocacy groups and support for the Fairness Doctrine, though the official reason cited was an undisclosed "conflict of interest".
With a badly damaged and largely ineffective GOP providing little in the way of real opposition, talk radio and blogs have taken on a bigger role in America's political future than ever.
That's why the temptation to clamp down on the Dear Leader's remaining critics will be far too difficult for Democrats to resist.

If the left wing is gearing up for such a push, I had trouble detecting it. A search of the liberal Daily Kos website turned up almost no mentions of the Fairness Doctrine. And the site's founder, Markos Moulitsas, said by e-mail Thursday that he sensed "zero impetus" to make the change.
"The right is using it as a straw man to build hysteria and opposition to the incoming Democratic administration and Congress," Moulitsas opined. "But there are zero serious efforts to make it happen."
An FCC commissioner visiting the Hub this week didn’t rule out the possibility of a return of the Fairness Doctrine - a scourge on conservative talk jocks - under the Obama administration.
“There has been a lot of talk on Capitol Hill about bringing it back, maybe with a different name, but bringing the idea back,” Robert McDowell of the Federal Communications Commision told the Herald. “I would say stay tuned and see how the next year or two pan out.”
The doctrine required stations to present both sides of an issue. It was repealed in 1987.
Reimposing that FCC regulation, McDowell said, could inhibit radio or TV stations from airing controversial opinion shows altogether because “they would be fearful that the FCC might not renew their license if it was determined they were not complying with the so-called Fairness Doctrine.”
(CNSNews.com) – Local AM radio stations WMAL and WTNT in Washington, D.C., should not be forced by the federal government to provide equal time for liberal political views to counter the largely conservative views expressed in their daily line-up of talk shows, Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) told CNSNews.com on Wednesday.
The stations WMAL and WTNT broadcast conservative or right-leaning shows. WMAL's lineup includes Fred Grandy and Andy Parks, Chris Plante, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin. WTNT's lineup features Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham, Dennis Miller, Mancow, Michael Savage and Lars Larsen.
Bingaman has indicated he supports reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, a federal regulation abandoned by the Reagan administration in 1987 that required programs using the public airwaves to “afford reasonable opportunity for the discussion of conflicting views of public importance.”

3 Comments:
Obamunism cannot exist with a free press. Like Communism before, only the party line is to be allowed to reach the public's dainty ears.
So how does this free speech suppression and censorship square with the first amendment. Before you could say the talk radio medium was not utilized, but now that argument would not be true.
How about we add some fair to CBS nightly news. Maybe they could use the audience increase.

Ed Morrissey's posting gives a good summary of the liberal desire to implement the Fairness Doctrine.
Along with the Fairness Doctrine, you can expect the new administration to push the following through Congress.
* Employee Free Choice Act (no secret ballot)
* Freedom of Choice Act (full government support of abortions)
* Nationalization of health care (including 20 million illegal aliens)
* Estate tax increases (sorry kids, nothing left for you)
* Illegal Alien Immigration Reform (driver's licenses for illegals)
* Capital gains tax increases (tax the job creators out of business)
* Defense cuts (25% as Russia and Iran smile)
* Liberal judicial appointments (to re-write the Constitution)
* Racial and ethnic preferences (affirmative action on steroids)
* Income tax increases (just give 'em more and more)
* Bans on oil drilling ($5 gas will quickly return)
* Global poverty tax (how many of the 6+ billion people will qualify?)
* Kyoto agreement (cut back on all manufacturing)
Can Reparations be far behind?
It's no wonder the stock market tanked once Obama was elected.
By The Benson Report, at 15 November, 2008 03:21
At this point, Benson, you are letting your imagination run wild. "the fairness doctrine" , is not coming back and it would not effect right wing radio, talk radio is ENTERTAINMENT (comedy, opinion)not NEWS. For the 1000th time, this is right wing fake issue, simply something to get the listeners of radical right wing radio to get excited about.
you other list is all in your imagination and intelectual dishonesty.
Just to highlight a few of your fantasies and intelectualy dishonest worldview
Freedom of Choice Act (full government support of abortions)
want to ban abortion? Ban the free market, as long as you support a dog-eat-dog form of social darwinism for government, abortion is a necessary evil of capitalism. I suppose you are willing to adopt unwanted children and help pay for unwanted children's well being??? Are you???? You right wingers do not want to pay a penny in higher taxes, yet you are against abortion. Again... who is going to pay for the child being born into welfare? YOU will BE. I'm fine with banning abortion, as well as all the zealots get a 500% tax increase to pay for these children. Benson, volunteer your money for a new child adoption system and increased welfare that will follow if you stop abortion. I don't want to pay for it. I support choice. End capitalism, I will gladly support ending abortion, continue on with capitalism, abortion will be a necessary evil.
* Nationalization of health care (including 20 million illegal aliens)
WRONG.... We already pay for health-care for illegal aliens. Always have. A single payer plan, benefits us working people, who are
NOT covered. We already have welfare for the unemployed and illegal, but nothing for the un-insured low wage earner. I suppose you hate those working folk, and think they should die if they can not afford healthcare. Typical right wing scum. Benson this is why you lost.
* Estate tax increases (sorry kids, nothing left for you)
The estate tax effects maybe at beat 1% of all people who inherit money. How many people do you know inheriting in the millions? I know not a soul. As usual you support the rich and spit on working people. As a conservative it figures, you would defend a tax that only millionaires are effected by. You know this to be the case, you are using classic intelectual dishonesty, to fool your Middle Class conservative base. DISGUSTING
* Capital gains tax increases (tax the job creators out of business)
LIES. LIES LIES. Obama did not promise a capital gains tax increase on small business. The majority of Americans are employed by small business, they will not receive a tax increase. YOU ARE LYING. Incidently.... how many jobs were created by Bush's tax cuts? NONE, we lost over 1.5 million. Tax cuts for ther rich DO NOT WORK. GET IT INTO YOUR THICK SKULL
Racial and ethnic preferences (affirmative action on steroids)
all in your creative, scared, rich , white mind. Not a word of affirmative action by obama, not a syllable
Income tax increases (just give 'em more and more)
TAX DECREASES, for 90% of us, according to
Obama, at this point you are being creative and dishonest.
Benson: If Obama does not bring the social-Democratic change we the people want, a socialist leaning 3rd party will form. A party like the Sandinista, socially conservative (pro-life) but economically socialist. It is on it's way
