Leftists React To Air America's Troubles

THE REAL 'STOOGES'?

'Progressives' Use Attacks To Spin AAR's Failures

Aware that their publicity- rich, yet money- wasting experiment with "progressive" talk radio is failing badly, excuse- making liberals are increasingly looking to spin Air America Radio's grand failure. And in doing so, they're on the attack against those who have exposed the network's many shortcomings.

Like marxists who believe the Soviet Union failed only because it didn't fully implement comrade Karl's teachings, Air America is now being portrayed as a failure not because liberal talk is unpopular, but due to poor internal programming decisions. That's despite a great number of "progressive" talkers who have now come and gone, including some with substantial backgrounds in leftist politics.

Until now, the Radio Equalizer has generally ignored these lefty critics, for the following reasons:

More often than not, they're commenting on stories that originated at the Radio Equalizer, but dishonestly refuse to give this site credit for breaking them. Instead, they'll cite others who picked up a story secondhand, as a result of reading it here. When we're mentioned, it's merely to engage in childish name- calling.

Next, they'll attack this site by nitpicking at our pieces, looking for tiny elements of our exclusive reports that didn't pan out when reviewing them months later. To them, it doesn't matter that our main points have an impeccable accuracy record over the last year, we're held to a far higher standard than so- called "progressives" expect from even the Washington Post or New York Times.

While the Radio Equalizer has given critics incredibly wide leeway in our comments section (below each post), their sites routinely block dissenting voices. Case in point: the Majority Report's website, which has been quick to eliminate opposing viewpoints. Here, we're sometimes even accused by readers of letting our detractors have too much freedom to engage in downright abusive online behavior. Yet we've let them attack at will.

One of the more annoying recent examples of this supposedly enlightened "progressive" behavior comes from the blog of WFMU-FM / New York City, where Michelle Malkin and your Radio Equalizer are dismissed as "stooges".

Yet in this lengthy "analysis" of Air America's situation, there's simply no getting around the fact that without our reporting, much of what's being discussed never would have come to light. Name- calling is merely a deflection away from that "reality".

Need some examples?

News that Air America would lose New York flagship WLIB-AM first broke here. Even if at the time we didn't have a firm date (noted in the story) on when this major hit to the network would take place, the report did in fact originate here. In addition, until the eleventh hour, Randy Michaels was the primary bidder to take over WLIB's operations. In the end, it doesn't really matter who takes over WLIB, the point is that Air America lost their mothership, resulting in tremendous damage to the operation.

Details of Al Franken's bloated contract were first exposed here, as were elements of the crazy Randi Rhodes deal signed earlier this summer.

News of Janeane Garofalo's departure from the "Majority Report" first broke here as well and was later confirmed by trade publications.

Several corporate executive exits have also first been revealed here, including that of programming head Carl Ginsburg.

In addition, the first report of Jerry Springer's likely removal from Air America's New York City lineup originated here.

The big enchilada, of course, was our original reporting on Air America's Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club scandal, where taxpayer grants for the inner- city charity were instead diverted to the liberal radio network. Michelle Malkin and yours truly worked for months on that project and the city investigation continues to this day.

In the end, so- called "progressives" can hate the Radio Equalizer and Michelle Malkin all they want, but the truth remains that without this reporting, they would know relatively little about this shadowy outfit's inner workings. To say otherwise is simply dishonest.

Thanks for your continued and vital Radio Equalizer support, via Amazon orders that begin with clicks here, regardless of what you ultimately order!

  • Wow, are you in a bad mood. Maybe you saw those Bush poll numbers? Maybe you saw the poll that only Americans no longer overwhellimngly think Republicans are better with "terrorism"? Maybe because of the impending doom of the corrupt GOP in november, and how Americans drasticaly favor Democrats now. People get fired in radio, it is the nature of the business, indicating Garaffalo and Springer leaving, does not reflect A.A doing poorly, it is a reflection of programming changes. You spew such vile, animosity, you sound like a litte 12 year old. Your side CONTROLS the MEDIA, but you no longer have the impact , you psychopaths one did. America woke up, the people have spoken, RNC pundidtry is DEAD. You preach to your 32% choir. you sick freaks can insult all you want. You try to marginalize 60% ofg America on a daily basis on cable T.v by calling the MAJORITY of AMERICA "loony Mcgovernites". 60% of this country is tired of the Iraqi war, you irrelevant pundits can no longer call the MAJORITY "loons". You have been marginalized. Your bitter, sociopathic rantings prove it.
If A.A is such a failure, and plays no impact
WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH IT???

THE RIGHT CONTROLS THE MEDIA, BUT DO NOT CONTROL THE AMERICAN MIND ANYMORE

YOU ARE NOW THE MARGINALIZED FRINGE.
    GET USED TO IT

  • Aren't we sensitive? If it wasn't for the ability of us left-wing kooks being able to make comments on your blog, you would lose about 50% of your traffic.

Maybe you should turn off the comments. Be like Malkin and Powerline with only an email address available for feedback. Or worse be like your boy Benson's blog who doesn't even provide an email address. This would be consistent with the Bush's policy of no opposing views at town hall meetings wouldn't it?

  • So...

    (A) Other outlets won't credit Radio Equalizer.
    (B) Other outlets are overly critical of Radio Equalizer.

Ummm Brian, which is it? It can't be both.

  • There are certainly a few stooges on this site.

People with a family have to be cautious when dealing with the wacko lefties.

The so-called progressives not only spew filth and tripe, but want to physically attack anyone who does not agree with them. This has been proven over and over again with the outrageous videos of the liberal mental idiots pushing, shoving and hitting the people recording the events. AND... We've even seen boasts of their attack bravado on this site.

Brian has been on the money with his many accurate calls about the AAR. It just pisses the left off to no end. They can't believe he could possibly be correct.

I've noticed a change in the loony side. They used to argue vehemently in favor of the great potential of the "AAR Juggernaut".

Now, just like Saturday Night Live Emily Litella ("Never mind") they are whimpering that they really never cared what happened to the broadcast version of AAR.

But in their demented minds, they think that just like the phoenix rising from the ashes, AAR will finally become an incredibly successful symbol representing the lunatic left by using the internet to spread their gospel of hate and lies.

    Big yawn!

  • So the "radioequalizer" acknowledges WFMU. That is a great first step. Now I can go on at length to explain what a great egalitarian radio station WFMU really is.

    WFMU.org

WFMU is a free-form radio station. Each DJ can play whatever he or she wants. Unbridled by any conventions, they do not have to play commercials, PSA's, weather reports, or traffic reports if they do not want to. Actually commercials are not needed because it is a listener-supported station. However, WFMU is not a public radio station and has never been considered to belong to the family of NPR or community stations. WFMU is THE free-form station of the nation.

The egalitarian nature of WFMU enters into the equation because the people that run WFMU love radio and realize that part of radio is CHANGE. So they will rotate hosts in and out of the broadcast schedule, switching a couple of hosts at twice a year intervals. Even the most popular hosts, such as the great lady Laura Cantrell, bows out of the rotation. What this means is that WFMU always sounds fresh, year in and year out.

All this freedom comes at a cost. Freedom is not free. The listeners donate money to keep WFMU running. It's a worthwhile investment, and people all over the USA and across the globe donate to keep the stream and blog going.

And finally, the connection to Air America Radio: WFMU provided the first outlet for Majority Report, giving Sam Seder broadcast time to test out the prototype Majority Report. That's the kind of great station WFMU is, and the dupes who keep saluting to Rush and Hannity and Hewitt and Savage can have their bottom-of-the-barrel spew mixed with commercials for herbal remedies and dating services. We've got our WFMU via broadcast, streaming, and podcasts. That is enough; and we WFMU fans listen to and support AAR because if the current administration and rethuglicans eventually get their way, the broadcast spectrum for WFMU would get wiped clean and handed over to fundies and monopolists for complete homogenization.

  • It is nice of The Equalizer to give us a synopsis of his, er, outstanding achievements on this blog. Then again, it's his blog so he can do whatever the hell he wants to do. Some folks like to put up cat pictures, some folks make inappropriate jokes about other bloggers' children. Different strokes and all that.

However, IMHO, if he really believes in what he is doing, then he shouldn't give one good goddamn who gets the credit, so long as the malefaction is exposed. Now, if someone is using his work to prop up their own stuff, then that's different. I don't see that happening. As to The Equalizer and Malkin being called "stooges," I can think of worse things they have been called, some of them right on this very blog.

But the main reason why no one is or has made a big stink about the failure of AAR is that (I think) most people knew going in that AAR would be a cash flow flop from day one - the only question was going to be how long it would be allowed to remain in the Loss Leader bin, and/or whether or not it would get Sorosian or Drobnyite crazy Donk cash infusions. Remember - AAR started off thinking that it could build its network listenership through the internet lash-up and initially bypassing the local stations, who need the local ads to pay for the operation of the station. AAR was a fatally flawed bidness concept from the outset.

So, don't break your arm patting yourself on the back there, Equalizer. You're only as good as your Last Scoop.

With those thoughts taken care of, we can move on to the more entertaining and insightful part of the comment thread.

RWW sez of The Equalizer: "You spew such vile, animosity, you sound like a litte 12 year old."

Later, in the very same post, he favors us with the following little tidbits of coherent, adult thinking:

"Your side CONTROLS the MEDIA, but you no longer have the impact , you psychopaths one did."

"you sick freaks can insult all you want."

"Your bitter, sociopathic rantings prove it. If A.A is such a failure, and plays no impact WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH IT???"
    _____

Yessiree, folks, it's good, solid, coherent logic and rhetoric like RWW gives us there that that'll woo 'em to pull the "D" lever every time.

Memo to RWW: When accusing someone of sounding like a 12-year-old, it is generally beneficial to your point not to sound like a 12-year-old yourself.

  • JD:

I ate breakfast in a restaurant that had the Today show on the TV the morning that Air America started. It was an interview with Al Franken. He had unbridled optimism that this was the start of a liberal network that would crush Limbaugh and Hannity in the ratings. Katie egged him on.

Then there were the initial ratings of the first few weeks which were relatively high. This was followed by the owners of the station in Chicago not getting paid and employees not getting their promised company paid insurance: The end of the optimism.

I think Brian and Michelle deserve quite a bit of credit for revealing the inner workings at AAR.

And of course, the story is not finished. When NYC folks hear the DOT squawk on 1610 drowning out AAR at 1600, there will be more reports from Brian and Michelle

  • Gimmee a break - this blog is a failure just like Baloney's failed career in hate talk radio.

A liberal has his old spot Sunday nights at Kiro 710!

All cling-ons like Baloney and Ms. Concentration Camp have left is how best to stylize their hate and resentment.

    What a miserable life!

  • WFMU, eh? Well, what else would you expect when you have kids run a "progressive" (IOW: Liberal) propaganda broadcasting station--"music" notwithstanding.

Perhaps these numbnuts at WFMU are saying AAR is NOT LIBERAL ENOUGH! Well to them I say, have you heard of WBAI--Commie Radio for NYC at 99.5?

  • I'm not spewing hate. It is so sad how conservatives when attacked and name called scream like "victims" as if a political party is a nationality. I speak the truth, Brian is bitter as can be. Maybe I used some colorfull words like "psychopaths", but your hero Boortz insults a whole BILLION people with his anti-Muslim attacks. I call far right wingers a name, and I'm the hatemonger?????????
It is true, if A.A is such a failure that nobody listens to, why is the right intent on attacking it 24/7?
    NOBODY CAN ANSWER THAT
I notice that there is not an anti-Pacifica site, they play very little impact, but there are actual anti-air america blogs. It shows it plays an impact. The same way the right wing media inspires liberals, to put up "Rush lies'" sites, conservatives attack A.A with their own sites (such as this one)
SO IT OBVIOUSLY PLAYS AN IMPACT
    prove me wrong....................
I don'r spout hate, I call names, to a radical group of far right wing, global expansionists, who want to destroy America, big difference between what I do, and what a creep like Boortz does.

    Now there's a name...

    >>THE RIGHT CONTROLS THE MEDIA

Outside of _successful_ talk radio shows and _successful_ Fox News Channel shows, the LEFT controls it.
(These "exceptions that prove the rule" of the liberal media are getting great ratings because there was a demand for the other side to be heard.)

If AAR had programming that would attract listeners, the likes of
WOR or WABC in New York would gladly run it. Instead, it goes from one
    ignored signal to another which--
as missouri show me noted--might get splashover from a TIS (Traveler's
    Info Station)! Capitalism works:
    people want conservative talk
not libtalk and that's why the bigger stations run it. And without funding from billionaires, to boot.

Well, I feel like going onto some
lib blogs and pretending to be progressive. I'll have to use a lot of profanity and ???question marks
    and !!!!!!!!!exclamation points!!!
    Hoo hah! It'll be fun!

  • Another downgrade for Air America, in liberal Vermont: Burlington Free Press
reports that 24/7 signal WVAA 1390
is switching from Air America to sports (ESPN), and Air America is moving to the daytime only WTWK 1070.

It was considered a victory for the libs when the opposite occured awhile back. Now the owners have realized their mistake.

    -------------------------
The Burlington-Plattsburgh, N.Y., region is getting its first 24-hour all-sports radio station, and local high school and college games will be included.

Beginning Monday, the national feed for ESPN Radio will be heard locally on AM 1390, a South Burlington station that is switching its call letters from WVAA to WCAT, according Rich De- Lancy, the market manager for Champlain Radio Group, which owns the station.

ESPN Radio has been available in the area on WTWK-AM (1070) in South Burlington, which is restricted to broadcasting only sunrise to sunset under its radio license from the Federal Communications Commission.

Air America, the talk show programming on WVAA, will move down the dial to WTWK, which also is owned by Champlain Radio. The programming will be trimmed to sunrise to sunset on the 5,000-watt station, DeLancy said.

what cable service do you have? I turn on ABC the message "Democrats are al Queda" "the british terror plot helps Bush"
I turn on CNN, the message "you cant support the troops and not support Iraq, a big problem for Democrats". "lamont is the Al Queda candidate"
I turn on NBC: " British terror plot makes Republicans stronger"

over and over the same f*cking RNC talking points, framed in questions in interviewers on all major networks, spouted by pundits all day long. You realy are smoking crack, if you actually think the media is slanted to the left. I could site 30 RNC talking points a day, filtered down on main-stream media.

Who says Liberals are against making money? The reality is conservative talk radio draws an older 60+ audience from the McCarthy era, a ceetain kind of myopic thinkers, who will loyally listen to the trash you call conservative talk radio. This makes up maybe 3% of the total polulation. The older folks who are stuck in the racist world of the mid 50's. 90% of America does not listen to A.M radio, the radio folks know this, the conservative talk format draws in the older demographic that still listens to A.M radio, the people without computers, and new technology. Simple as that. There is not nationwide demand for the kind of garbage Boortz, limbaugh, and Medved feed their myopic, scared listenership. Fear and loathing is exactly what the right wing sells, their narrow minded bigoted audience. These hateful people do not make up the majority of America

By Blogger Minister of Propaganda, at 17 August, 2006 11:46

  • >>an older 60+ audience

No, it does very well in the 25-54s
and the 12 +...And conservatalk radio draws listeners, and callers, from across the political spectrum ("all
right, go ahead, Mr. Liberal"--Hannity) while libtalk
pretty much draws only the far left.
Others on the left prefer NPR.

The success of conservative talk has led CNN to feature the likes of
    hard-on-crime Nancy Grace and
conservatalker Glenn Beck, in the hopes of getting higher ratings. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em (that being said, CNN still lags behind
    FNC...)

  • Racoon: I'm willing to go out on a limb and say the audience tends to be on the older side of the 25-64. I believe there is another ratings group for older listeners, not published anywhere, but I could be wrong.

yeah, on occason the left can be a bit hatefull, you had to go back to Jackson's bigoted remark to find an instance. I could site 20 instances a week from the right. The liberals listen to conservative radio because we tend to be more open minded, we don't think of "Joe Republican' as an enemy of America, we find you folks severly misguided, you guys on the other hand as evidenced by Coulter and Savage, think "Joe Libeal", is an enemy of America.
You still can not dipute the fact that main stream media has become a mouthpiece for the right wing. No dispute, it is NOW A FACT.

No, I'm wasn't screaming "victim," I was gently pointing out hypocrisy on your part. Since you were evidently unable to grok that concept, here it is, in black and white: YOU. ARE. A. HYPOCRITE.

No one on this board has come on here with any amount of venom or foul language to match yours. No one has come up with such empty rhetoric backed by physical threats on people with whom you disagree. What you call "colorful words" is not a language that people who prefer to think, rather than emote, tend to think in.

I could get down in the verbal mud with you and destroy you, but I choose not to. It's not my blog, I don't have that right.

You keep bringing up Neal Boortz for some reason. Prove to the class that Boortz is my, or the collective our, "buddy". I live in a market that does not even get Neal Boortz to my knowledge, unless he is on a 0300 shift at an outlying Salem station. I don't read his blog. And nowhere in this conversation has Neal Boortz entered until you brought him in - three times so far, without response from anyone else about it by myself.

RWW, I think your name here from now on ought to be "Strawman," because that now seems to be the only way you can debate an issue.

Then again, that would make you the perfect AAR listener, wouldn't it?

By Blogger SierraSpartan, at 17 August, 2006 18:00

  • I apologize to the readers if it seems I am threadjacking, because I'm not deliberately trying to do so, but The Strawman's recent fixation with Neal Boortz got me to thinking. It seems that Neal Boortz has recently entered the regard of the AAR-sphere due to his recent (second week of August) appearance on Larry King with Randi Rhodes, where Rhodes pimps MMFA on several occasions. Perhaps that is the genesis of The Strawman's fixation on Boortz.

And, since evidently The Strawman has a bee in his bonnet about what Neal Boortz's views on the RoP, I decided to do a little checking around and came up with this link with an embedded YouTube (audio recording with images overlaid) recorded from around the time when the RoP got its collective panties in a wad over the MoToons.

In this recording, an individual who claims to be RoP calls in to complain to Boortz about Boortz's rather strong statements regarding the RoP in the wake of the MoToons controversy, and Boortz administers a six-minute beatdown that, while a bit cruel and possibly over the top, was also 100% on the money regarding the hypocrisy surrounding "Muslim Outrage," because muzzies collectively seem to show outrage only when it is muzzies being "attacked" or the ROP being "insulted," but never when it is their co-religionists doing the attacking or the insulting.

For myself, I was willing to give the RoP the benefit of the doubt (that it was just crazies and outcasts) in the few weeks and months after 9/11. But frankly, there should have been some sort of Wittenburg Cathedral moment by now within Islam. Instead, you have outfits like CAIR that are evidently unable to put out a press release denouncing actions of members of the RoP without deflection of blame or motive in some fashion, but will ascribe every negative motive in the book if someone dares cross any of the tenets of the RoP.

The RoP desperately needs some kind of "Protestant Reformation" from within, because if it keeps up with its current violent tack, then it will have a reformation imposed upon it externally (resulting in the loss of the better part of its membership).

And yes, Strawman, "RoP" is an LGF expression. I read LGF. Deal with it.

  • WHT said "No one has a clue what you are talking about."

If you don't understand the message from JD, then try Google to figure out the connection.

The take-down of the "holier-than-thou" Muslim caller by Boortz should go into the Radio Talker Show Hall of Fame. It was a classic moment. Millions of sane people all over the world have the same view. Where is the outrage from the RoP?
