Is Something Fishy In Secaucus?

With the New York Post reporting that MSNBC General Manager Dan Abrams is happy as a clam hosting shows in Joe Scarborough's recently- vacated night slot, is something fishy in the land of Olbermann and Hardball?

Think about it: by moving Joe The Weirdo into Don Imus's former morning slot, a spot conveniently opens up for the boss to give himself a show. Didn't that ring alarm bells at MSNBC?

Why else would anyone in their right mind move Scarborough to mornings? It sure smells like a conflict of interest.

From the Post:

DAN Abrams is said to be thrilled to be back on the air at 9 p.m. at MSNBC, where he's also the general manager running the cable channel. With Joe Scarborough doing the morning time slot vacated by Don Imus, "Scarborough Country" has been put on hiatus, and the 9 p.m. slot is now "Live with Dan Abrams."

"He's having a blast," said a friend of Abrams, who is doing both jobs for now. Asked if Abrams would give up his management duties, an MSNBC spokesman said, "If it becomes permanent, that will have to be discussed."

Since it's far from typical to have individuals both in charge of programming and hosting shows, isn't NBC reviewing his moves to make sure they are in the channel's best interests?

  • Speaking of MSNBC, Olberman ( the one hour of "lib media" a day) is at arond 700,000 viewers a night, not too far behind Bill riley (1.3 million on average)

bu bu bu bu bu bu bu lib media does not work, bu bu bu.... Notice, the only show on MSNBC with any ratings is Olberman.

  • Speaking of Olbermann:

"Countdown with Keith Olbermann" (8:00 – 9:00 pm ET) continues to rocket up the ratings charts…”

The above claim is from MSNBC on May 30, 2007:

    http://nbcumv.com/release_detail.nbc/msnbc-20070530000000-msnbcratingscontin.html

While Olbermann’s ratings roughly doubled during the summer of 2006, they have remained flat since January of 2007. Here are all of the numbers I found at TV Newser (mediabistro.com). If anyone has data on 9/2006, 12/2006, and 3/2007, please share:

    Olbermann viewers aged 2+:

    314,000 May 2006

    286,000 June 2006

    324,000 July 2006

    426,000 Aug 2006

    616,000 Oct 2006

    689,000 Nov 2006

    673,000 Jan 2007

    677,000 Feb 2007

    708,000 Apr 2007

    598,000 May 2007

    597,000 June 2007

Fact: Olbermann’s numbers in June 2007 were more than double that of the previous June, and I do not object if MSNBC issues another press release stating so.

Lie: Countdown with Keith Olbermann continues to rocket up the ratings charts…, since his numbers have remained 650,000 +/- 60,000 since October 2006 (assuming the missing months are not outside that range).

Question: 700K is not too far behind 1.3 million - What math did you take in school?

And your numbers are pathetically wrong!

According to the Neilsen Media Research for the 2nd Qtr 2007

FOXN THE OREILLY FACTOR - 2,211,000
    MSNB COUNTDOWN W/K. OLBERMANN - 631,000

In order for Countdown to match the Factor numbers, Olby would have to increase his audience by 250% !

    Countdown w/ Olbermann – 812,000 viewers (224,000) Monday July 11th
    http://insidecable.blogsome.com/2007/07/11/mondays-numbers-63/#more-6453

    That is over 700,000.......

    want more recents.....

    Countdown w/ Olbermann – 827,000 viewers (181,000) Thursday July

See a pattern...... numbers going up ......

    more?
    Countdown w/ Olbermann – 797,000 viewers (197,000) Tuesday July 3rd.........

Think it will be a higher average this month?? mmmmmm

Benson, so, are my numbers wrong. I dont recall them ever hitting the 800,000 mark (olberman) And Oriley us under the 2 million mark every day so far this month.......

mmmmmmm. sounds like I'm right. 800,000 vs 1.5 - 1.7, not too bad for Olberman..... oriley is not gaining, but olberman is.. obvious trend

  • ACCURACY: I'll take the Neilsen reports over a cable blog for accuracy any day.

OLBERMANN RATING: Missouri Show Me has already supplied a strong response to your alleged "trend" claim.

O'REILLY RATING: The Neilsen information for the past quarter (2.2 million) blows away your very questionable 1.3 million average number.

By Blogger The Benson Report, at 11 July, 2007 16:40

  • MOP:

Your ratings numbers the days around July 4 omit one critical detail:

OLBERMANN HOSTED FRESH SHOWS, O'REILLY DID NOT!

These occasional daily spikes have been smoothed out in the monthly numbers since October of 2006.

Also, the daily numbers work to KO's advantage, since they include same day views of recorded shows. Viewers of BOR's second showing at 11 pm ET are recorded as a separate number, while people who view a recording of KO's show at 11 pm ET are included in the first number in the daily totals.

By Blogger Chromium, at 11 July, 2007 18:58

  • But if you stand on one foot and tilt your head to the left it appears his numbers are high.

Can we say grasping for straws.

    By Blogger pf1, at 12 July, 2007 00:36

  • Since I know MOP is concerned with the latest trendline, the latest results:

    7/11/07:
    8PM - P2+ (25-54)
    The O’Reilly Factor – 2,309,000 viewers (402,000)
    Paula Zahn – 490,000 viewers (182,000)
    Countdown w/ Olbermann – 788,000 viewers (214,000)
Fast Money- 151,000 viewers (a scratch with 44,000)
    Nancy Grace – 625,000 viewers (245,000)

The numbers you used showed KO losing to BOR by 2-to-1. Now, KO is back 3-to-1. And he's not even in 2nd place in the demo!

  • Don thanks for being a fair and balanced anchor because you don't have a horse on the race. Like those other pundits on the morning joe they are such cynics because they say that their families are supporting. I hope that when this race is over they can come up and defend the American people if something comes up if something goes wrong. They are going for Obama he looks so arrognat and the way he talks is creeping my spine, god helps us if he wins we already had one of those a uniter and a fresh face Bush. The pundits are putting a blind fold on the voters eyes. Former President Clinton didn't play the race card the pundits did. The african american should know better because they were good to them they did a lot for them. Thank you Don because you look to the issues that each candidate has to offer. Keep up the good work and I hope that we can have the best president for our country not the one that the media wants to choose, are the voters, stupid!?
