Michael Savage Show, Presidential Run

PRESIDENT SAVAGE?

Talk Host Considers Run

Could the Savage Nation soon take over the White House?

According to NewsMax, syndicated talk host Michael Savage is seriously considering joining the ranks of those seeking the presidency in 2008.

Upon any declaration of candidacy, of course, Savage would be forced to give up his successful syndicated talk show.

Last week, we broke the story of Savage's profanity- laced tirade against his staffers, which mistakenly went out over the airwaves.

From the NewsMax report:

Michael Savage Mulls Presidential Run

Michael Savage, the nation's third-most listened to radio talk-show host, says he may leave his top rated show to make a bid for the GOP nomination for president.

"I know it sounds bizarre but when you consider the people running for the presidency, none . . . seems to be qualified," Savage told NewsMax in an exclusive interview.

Savage, based at the San Francisco Bay area's KNEW station, began his syndicated "Savage Nation" show in 2000. Today his network, Talk Radio Network, boasts that Savage is heard on over 370 stations across the country by 8 million listeners a week.

The controversial radio host packs a powerful punch in his three-hour daily show and can spark national news. Savage was credited with bringing the Dubai Ports World deal to national attention. The deal would have turned over U.S. port operations to the Middle Eastern company. A public outrage ensued, forcing Dubai Ports World to scuttle their plan.

Savage has also parlayed his loyal base into four consecutive New York Times best sellers, including his latest "The Political Zoo" — a satirical criticism of both Republicans and Democrats.

Savage, with his loyal listenership, says he can play an important role in the Republican primaries, gain critical support, and add to the planned debates.

"I would think that somebody who's not a politician might be a viable candidate," Savage stated, stressing that he would focus his campaign on his mantra: "Borders, language, Culture."

Back to Party Roots

Savage readily admits he has little chance of being elected.

Still, he's convinced he could help push the Republican Party back to its conservative roots.

"A non-politician who has a very large following, who is very conservative, and who believes in a simple message of borders, language, and culture has a great chance of electrifying the American people," Savage said, complaining the current flock of candidates are simply parroting "sound bytes."

Would Savage actually run? Your Radio Equalizer believes he would never give up his highly- lucrative talk show for a hopeless attempt at running for president. More likely, Savage is looking to drum up some publicity.

However, because he's exceptionally unpredictable, who knows?

  • Since the Republicans aren't likely to win in 2008 (and, some may argue, don't want to as, whoever takes office in 2008 will likely be a one-term loser who takes blame for Iraq) what could it hurt? Of course, he'll draw media attention and his bombastic nature will certainly make wonderful sound bytes but it would be fun to see how he handles himself when he doesn't have control over the fader or the clock. If the Republicans truly want to lose in 2008, I'm certain Savage would be the ideal candidate to convert fly-over country from red to blue, making the dem a shoo in!

Oh, and for the record, Savage didn't break the Dubai Ports story. The Associated Press is credited with that distinction. Leave it to News Max to give credit where it is NOT due. Eight million people listen to Savage per week, or, approximately 1.6 million per day, and Associated Press stories reach a potential audience of BILLIONS per day. I got the story from the original source the day it was reported. Once Savage made a stink about it, I did a rare defense of the president and explained to my audience that, as repulsive as the deal may be, it wasn't unusual as many major ports are under foreign control. This is the price you pay when you depend on foreign dollars to buttress your economy. As we wanted to wage a war and cut taxes at the same time, someone had to pay the bill. Then again, I opposed NAFTA for this very reason and predictd this would be one of the outcomes. So, Savage informed about 1% of America and AP reported it to everyone else a day before. But Savage gets "credited with bringing the Dubai Ports World deal to national attention", according to News Max. Gotta love spin. Hey, maybe they can be his PR hacks and give him credit for other things he didn't do... like inventing the phrase "borders, language and culture", which was part of the text from America's first immigration bill... in 1880!

Oh, and would he run as Savage.... or Weiner? I don't think America is ready for a president who runs on a pseudonym and WEINER for President? Hmmm... I can see the roadside signs now.

Oh, and wait until his past comes out, particularly the naked pictures of he and Allen Ginsberg cavorting naked on a beach in Hawaii. When he converted from flaming liberal to pistol brandishing conservative and decided to threaten all of his old hippie friends, he made many powerful enemies who, I'm sure, can't wait to tell us things about Weiner that would make Ted Haggart's gay hooker/meth dealer blush.

You're right, Brian. He'd never give up his show. As well as having to surrender control of his surroundings and the debate and getting over his urge to public curse out any detractor he couldn't stand up to the public scrutiny.

    It's just another publicity ploy.

  • Why not Dave? Minnesota elected Jimmy Panos. You don't recognize that Governor? How about Jesse "The Governor" Ventura?

Again Dave, if you were really any good, why weren't you promoted as the great Liberal antidote to Limbaugh? I notice you go absolutely silent when confronted with that reality.

  • Fudgie, you wouldn't know "reality" if it spit in your face (and it may...)

  • Hash, get help before it is too late.

  • Fair and balanced: now, a lib-leaning host drops the F-bomb. Chris Matthews on the Imus show.

Got bleeped on radio version but they couldn't catch it on MSNBC, we hear. "I want a guy running for President who doesn't have a f------,
I'm sorry, a ranch." Version below is
    unbleeped

  • Chris Matthews is "lib-leaning"??

  • "Again Dave, if you were really any good, why weren't you promoted as the great Liberal antidote to Limbaugh? I notice you go absolutely silent when confronted with that reality. "

Actually PCD, I answered your question in a previous post but I'll be happy to repeat it again.

After over 20 years in corporate media and entertainment I needed a break. I was fortunate that my management skills and capability to generate ratings and revenue for my employers allowed me to do whatever I wished to do on the air. The numbers speak for themselves, PCD and if you wish to research the success of the Wilmington Cumulus stations from 2000 to 2006 you will discover what dominance looks like.

I had a job for life as the Director of Marketing and Promotions and, when I decided that I wanted to walk away, my bosses were willing to offer me anything to stay, even the show I wanted to do that would have, in affect, knocked Savage completely off the air. In fact, if I have a desire to return to corporate radio, I have jobs a plenty waiting for me.

But my success came at the price of my family which is why I sold the house and moved to Mexico. Now, I get to spend tons of time with my daughters and show them all the places we never got to because my life belonged to a corporation.

But, I also realized that the novel that has been rolling around in my head for 14 years would never be written as long as I was at the beck and call of my stations. I say, "my stations" because, as well as a nice stock portfolio, I take a proprietary interest wherever I work and have always inspired my employees to do likewise.

My agent is shopping my novel as a trilogy. If it sells for even a fraction of what we project, I can actually do what I've always wanted to do; move to my dream island off the North Carolina coast, start my employee-owned businesses and buy my own station so that I can actually serve my community rather than a retinue of faceless, emotionless investment bankers.

I'm following the Art Bell model. My show will be my show. My syndication company will be my syndication company. And, while you may be one of those poor schleps who reduces everything to a left/right paradigm, I can actually do my show that lets me dismantle the corporatist two-party myth that allows our politicians to use the constitution as toilet paper and is slowly boling all of us alive with frogwater fascism.

This is a feeling that is permeating throughout our country, PCD, but in order to build a movement of people who are no longer going to be satisfied with "just getting by" and refuses to be anesthetized by junk entertainment and two party talking points and their fake polemic, you have to be able to understand and communicate FACTS in order to put forth an informed opinion, facts that are, to borrow the phrase, inconvenient truths to corporations.

I don't wish my talent to be a commodity that belongs to a disconnected media corporation and requires putting up sacred cows so as to appease corporate sponsors, political parties or PACS. The nation is dying for unvarnished truth and real solutions and strategies for retaking our country back from the military, petroleum and agricorp industrial triumverate that owns the media and Washington DC. Mom and pop businesses are dying to find a real advocate for them and will support that advocacy with their advertising dollars. Communities that have been rendered into burnt out shells of their former glory need to rebuild and realize that they don't possess the political pull to net the attention of the corporations who outsourced their very existence or politicians who proclaimed Mission Accomplished while they wile away their days in FEMA Camps awaiting evicition while their insurance companies refuse to compensate them for their loss. The last thing the corporate power structure wants and will allow is for the people to actually realize what power they have and how they've been sold out by the media power structure I've served since 1984.

But, throughout the country are a handful of family owned radio stations struggling to compete with the media corporations. They are dying for original content that will generate the ratings and revenue needed to keep them alive. Content that resonates with listeners who are struggling to stay alive in an era when Americans are drowning from overwhelming debt and negative savings unprecedented since the Depression. They've been sold out by the Democrats and Republicans, they're pissed and they want their country back and don't give a rats ass what Simon Cowell or Michael Savage have to sneer.

So, as I said previously, I am getting to live exactly the life I wish, beholden to no one and with my family at the center. What about you, PCD? Can you boast the same?
